The other day, following the member exchange meeting, Jeff Grant from the Daily News Sun, asked me how i felt things went? I said it didn't matter, because this was just the preliminaries, you know the under-card to the main event. And as g47 pointed out, there were only 22 residents in the room. Ever wonder why motions like this appear in June when so many folks are gone and others hate going out in the heat? Anyway, for those who don't know how it works, following the board/member exchange, the board heads off to it's closed door work session to talk. Obviously we don't know what was said, that's a secret. What we do know is, not one non-board member in the room spoke in favor of moving forward on this motion. No one who spoke saw it as a positive with the downside being far greater than any potential upside. Here's where this is headed: The board meeting is scheduled for June 30 at 9 am at the Sun Dial rec center. Don't know if they have another work session between now and then, but what they will do, or have done is poll the board to see if they can get a majority of 5 board members to vote yes on the motion. If they do get a consensus yes, they will then have a formal vote to pass at that meeting. If they don't get 5 votes, they will pull the motion. The third option is to let the motion be defeated, but they hate doing that. Members will get to speak to the motion before the vote, but board members are expected to vote the way they did in the work session consensus vote so as not to make others look bad. I always hated that because in essence, it renders whatever residents say as meaningless. Hope that helps explain how this moves forward.
Okay, so now we know what will happen next. Clearly the board is moving forward on the proposal based on their recent red herring release. They wouldn't have taken the time to do this unless they were moving forward. Here's how it plays out: On the 30th the board will meet and included in the agenda will be a chance for residents to speak for or against the motion to form a for-profit" corporation. This will be done before the vote on the motion. If and when the speaker asks the board a question, the president will politely tell them this isn't the member exchange and the board will not be answering any questions. When the vote comes up, it will be a simple yes or not vote. Any board member who isn't in favor should have lodged that position beforehand art the work session. In that they are moving forward on this, clearly they know they have enough votes on the board already, so no matter what you say or what you think, it's a done deal. Guess i will have to change my signature to reflect the new Sun City...corporation before community, politics before people.
I see the Sun City Independent posted a letter about it. Not much of a real opinion on it though, just restating facts. At least it's something other than talk of dog poop and median art displays.
