Can I assume the picture you're referring to is that of an empty room?

The fact that only 3 Members showed-up for the Special Session and only 8 people were watching on-line can only be caused by two things:
    1. Nobody cares what the RCSC does as long as they can still go to their Club events? (Ignorance is bliss)
    2. The Members realized that no matter what they say or recommend, it falls on deaf ears. (Frustrated complacency)

Or the membership doesn’t know these meetings are happening due to lack of access to electronic communications. We still rely too heavily on electronic communications as the main method of communication with the members. People don’t want to have to log into the RCSC website, do secondary verification, then try to slog through various options to get the information needed.
And email blasts just don’t cut it for the bulk of the membership. How many members versus how many signed up for emails? Proof right there there’s no real information sharing going on.
Yep, apathy is a piece of it, but if you don’t know, you can’t be involved.

Members have figured out that it’s a waste of time to attend. Nobody on the board wants any input and their minds are made up as to what the agenda will be. They will get their way on MV or they commission another study. The majority of members are opposed to a standalone PAC. Is that going to stop the board? I don’t think so.
Apathy is the problem, not communication.

How do you combat apathy? Do even less? Cover your eyes and hope it gets better?
Informed members are the only way to create change. Being naive enough to believe that electronic media is the best source for information sharing in a community that has a base of about 25% that has no access to that format is willfully ignoring the people who make up the community.
Electronic media is singular, as in it’s done by a single action by a single user. How does this create a community when everyone is in their own electronic media world, independent of others and out of sight? When reading a newspaper or print leaflet or magazine, it becomes tangible. It becomes portable and accessible because it can be carried to a wider audience or neighbor or to a meeting. The written word is a catalyst for change but only when in the hands of those who have a chance to read, disseminate and create an opinion to share. Not in a singular sound bite but in a coherent, collaborative conversation. In my opinion, that’s a great start to beating apathy.
