    Think Like a Thief

We all have the right to feel safe in our own homes. Although Sun City has one of the lowest crime rates in the area, there are still those individuals who would like to break into our houses and help themselves to our belongings. Unfortunately, sometimes the best way to outwit a thief is to think like a thief.
The Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City suggests that you ask the following questions to help you keep your home more secure from intrusion.
    • Are your exterior doors protected by a security door that is kept locked, even when you are at home ?
    • Do you have motion sensor lights at in the front and rear of the house ?
    • Is there a wide angle viewer in the front door so that you can see who is there without opening the door ?
    • Can your front entrance be observed from the street, and is there shrubbery or other landscaping blocking that view ?
    • Are sliding glass patio doors secured and kept from being lifted out of the track by a pin lock in the upper track, or some other device ?
    • Do you keep your overhead garage door closed all the way, even when you are at home ? An open garage door is an invitation to thieves to help themselves to your belongings.
    • Do ground floor windows have adequate locks, and are they obscured from view by landscaping or other construction ?
    • Is your house number easily visible from the street so that first responders can find it quickly ?
A thief will always look for the most vulnerable target. Your goal should be to make your home as inconvenient for him to enter as possible.
Remember, if you see or hear something that makes you uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to call the Posse. If you feel that someone is actually trying to break into your home, call 911 at once.
