Are you having any luck filtering out all the unwanted phone calls from sales, charities, and scams? We're on the No Call list and have caller ID which helps a bit. The problem comes when we are expecting a call and our expected caller has a vague ID such as "unknown", "private caller" or the latest "IP Voice". We let the answering machine pick up these calls but many times the people we WANT to hear from don't leave a message. I must admit if I happen to answer a call from Jim, Joe or Gary(a scam about Microsoft Tech Help) who is most likely calling from an India call center, I really mess with them. My favorite thing is to tell them to call back on my landline which is actually the Maricopa County Sheriff's non emergency number or the County Attorney's office. As a tie-in to this, on December 1st 10:00-noon at the Fairway Rec Center SCHOA is holding a Town Hall Forum covering the subject of scams with a representative from the County Attorney's Office.
Gave up the landline for a while but had to get it back...cell phone reception is not yet up to par. Drives me crazy sometimes. The sound quality is such a relief on a landline. VOIP is very reasonable.
I keep my landline because I like to use the big old princess-type phone. I agree the sound is better and more comfortable to have it fit my ear. We do have some portable phones for landline but it's good to keep one direct plug-in for when the electricity goes out. You can't use portable phones and I don't want to rely just on a cell phone that may not be fully charged.
I will always have a landline. My cell phone is only for emergencies when I am out and about. Actually, I have 4 cell phones. Three (3) of them can only dial 911. The other is always in my purse. The first of every month I charge all of them. A friend of mine fell in her kitchen and could not get up to the telephone. She was there overnight until someone became concerned when she did not answer phone. Consequently, 2 of my phones are on a lower shelf for easy access. Presumably I would be able to drag myself to one of them.
I need both. A smartphone has so many functions now, but for long conversations at home its a landline for now. I do use the TV antenna when I'm in SC. The reception is clear but I miss some channels Im used to. I might get over that one though with so much streaming available.
