One day I sat by someone at the Bell Pool who had been one of the sons in the original King and I in London. What kind of talent have you met in Sun City?
That is awesome gilmark ! ! Bet he was an interesting person to ****-chat with. I think there would be many many interesting & talented folks around -- Sun City Residents do come from all walks of life and different types of backgrounds.
Just this past Sunday we had a rising star, Katelin Fitts sing God Bless the Outcasts from The Hunchback of Notre Dame at The Church of the Palms. Although just a high school sophomore, she finished a week-long choral intensive at Warren Wilson College with Tom Shelton, conductor, and Mike Weaver, professional choreographer. She's active with a local community theatre, chorus, and theatre in NC. She has also performed with her two cousins at the Fifth Friday Open Mic Night at Church of the Palms. BTW, mark those calendars everyone since the whole community is always invited to a free evening of fun and food. Never know what to expect at that event.
I have the privilege of meeting an author from Alaska who spends winters in Sun City. Millie Spezialy wrote and illustrated the cutest book called "Binky's Trophy--the Story of an Alaskan Polar Bear" and self-published it. The book as sold over 12,000 copies! As a self-publishing author, I can tell you this is an amazing feat. The book -- great for grandchildren -- can be purchased on Amazon.com. She also is a runner and wrote the book "Mount Marathon" about the great Alaska footrace in which she participates each year. Amazing woman!
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a lot of hidden talent/celebrities in Sun City......what a great place to retire to, a community where you are judged not by who you were, or what you did, but by who you are now. We are all newcomers when we come to Sun City.....we become friends, neighbors and family over time.
You can see some really interesting talented folks at Fifth Friday Open Mic Night at Church of the Palms (across from Sundial), and one is coming up this August 30 at 6 p.m. The whole community is always invited to a free evening of fun and food (donations accepted). Never know what to expect at that event. This one is themed The 40's, so attendees are encouraged to wear something suggestive of that time if they want to do so. The performances won't be limited to that theme. Call to let them know you're coming, and if you have something to present (3-5 mins.) tell them: 623-977-8359. See ya!
Talk about talent...this Sunday at the Sundial Rec Center Sun City's own Mark Baker will be on stage and I promise you it will be an event not to be missed. This free show will be a treat for anyone who makes the effort to be in attendance. It's the yearly August Ice Cream social and always draws a crowd. Show time is 7 pm but I would get there early. Not sure, but i'm pretty sure the food trucks will be there before the show's begins.
Fifth Friday, Church of Palms. What time? Is it posted outside the church? I drive by there every time I go to Sundial.
6 p.m. Yes, it is a very convenient location. This will be the last of the year since although Nov. has a fifth Friday, it right after Thanksgiving, so that won't work too well since the church holds a turkey dinner for the community on Thurs. so that would be too much. That's okay since the big craft fair will be at Sundial that Friday and Sat., so I can easily keep busy there and then drop at the end of the day.
Heard some folks are going to be dressed similar to celebrities of the forties that they admire--heard of Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour, Rosie the Riveter, should be interesting. Someone said since they were a kid then they might pin their childhood dress on herself. People are thinking!
