We do the same thing for the right intentions, too! Newspapers tossed in the driveways are easy to see, but sometimes a business card or small flyer is tucked in between the door and the frame. These materials left in the door show how often it is used.
Lest anyone misunderstand, garbage is paid for on a yearly basis whether you are here or not. Putting garbage in a neighbor's trash can is a deterrent for those who may be watching for signs of inactivity. We've gone through times (when there were burglary rings operating in the valley) where whatever you could do to stop them just made sense. The reality is most of the time there isn't much of a worry on break-ins. The bigger problem is from people who leave a garage door open and someone drives by and grabs.
