Today, October 14, 2013, is National Southern Food Heritage Day.

A traditional Southern meal is pan-fried chicken, peas, greens, mashed potatoes, cornbread, sweet tea, and a dessert that is usually a pie.

Other foods and beverages commonly associated with the South are grits, country ham, hushpuppies, Southern styles of succotash, mint juleps, chicken fried steak, buttermilk biscuits, pimento cheese, boiled or baked sweet potatoes, pit barbecue , fried catfish, fried green tomatoes, bread pudding, okra (fried, steamed, stewed, sauteed, or pickled), butter beans, pinto beans, and black eyed peas.

When I visit a cousin in Georgia, she always serves fried chicken. She includes grits with breakfast. I like the chicken but can do without the grits.

My favorite foods when I lived in Texas were Fried Sweet Potatoes, Fried Okra and Fried Corn Bread ! !
All made = fresh and homemade. :eek:range:
We had a super garden and picked the wonderful harvests of Okra ! Yummy ! !
I try to avoid all that FRIED Food now...but oh- - -so good ! !
