Why are a/c units on the roof in Sun City?

I've been told it's because all the duct work, especially in the block and older structures, is in the attic. The walls are not wide enough for vents and returns. Ours is an original block home and the A/C is mounted on the side of the house. I guess one advantage is that the cold air comes directly into the house without a long trip through a duct from a ground mounted unit.
