As members of the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City, we are often asked why we do what we do. We walk around your house checking to make sure that everything is secure while the temperature is 108 degrees and you are on vacation in a much cooler place.
We stand in the middle of the street directing traffic at a fire or a traffic accident while cars and trucks are whizzing past us. We are out every night in the dark, and even on those rare times when it rains, making sure that the doors to your church are locked, your garage door is closed, and that no one has tampered with the many wells that supply our water here in Sun City.
We receive no financial compensation for doing these things, but that does not mean that we are not rewarded for our efforts. When we receive a friendly wave as we pass you on the street in our patrol cars, or you send a thank you note to our headquarters for some service we have provided for you, we count that as our pay check.
Recently, while on routine patrol, one our Posse Deputies observed a gentleman in a motorized wheelchair attempting to cross a busy street at a traffic light. Because of his seated position, he was not able to reach the button to activate the walk light signal. Our deputy positioned his patrol vehicle with the overhead lights flashing, pushed the button to turn on the walk light, made sure all the traffic had come to a stop, and escorted the gentleman across the street. When they reached the other side of the street, the man turned to our deputy and said “Are you an angel ? I was sitting there praying for someone to help me, and you appeared. You must be an angel.”
We certainly don’t consider ourselves to be angels, but when we get a reaction like that we feel like we have received a bonus check.
The Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City receives no financial support from any government entity. All of our members are volunteers and our cars, our radios, uniforms, and everything else we use are purchased with funds donated through the gratitude and generosity of the people of Sun City. To learn more about who we are and what we do, stop by headquarters at 10861 Sunland Dr (623-972-2555) for a cup of coffee, or visit us on the web at www.suncityposse.org.
