Posse Begins 2014 Fund Drive Forty years ago, Sun City was far from downtown Phoenix or any other population center. Because of this relative isolation, law enforcement coverage was considered by residents to be less than adequate. A group of concerned citizens, using their own personal vehicles and carrying a pocket full of dimes in case they had to use a pay phone to call the police, began to patrol the streets of Sun City. As they patrolled, they stayed alert for any signs of trouble and assisted their neighbors in any way they could. This group of volunteers eventually became the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City, which you see patrolling the streets of Sun City today. We still keep on the alert for signs of trouble and we still help our neighbors in any way we can. Today, instead of using our personal vehicles, we have those shiny black cars and instead of a pocket full of dimes, we have radios that keep us in touch with each other and with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. In 2012, our Vacation Watch program performed over 34,000 individual house checks and we donated 76,000 volunteer hours while driving our cars 186,000 miles patrolling the streets of Sun City acting as the “eyes and ears” of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. As we begin our annual fund drive for 2014, we would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the following facts: All of our members are unpaid volunteers. Everything we use to serve Sun City, our cars, radios, uniforms, buildings and our ability to operate and maintain them is dependent on your donations. We do not receive financial support from any government agency. We depend entirely on the gratitude and generosity of the people of Sun City. Funds that are donated to the Sheriff’s Posse of Sun City are used only for the benefit of our residents. Please be as generous as you can in your financial contribution. We are a 501(c)(3) corporation, so your donation may be tax deductible.
