What is the difference between Phase I and Phase II of the Sun City homes? I thinking the Phase I was built first (1960's and the Phase II at a later time -1970's and 1980s perhaps? Thanks Patty and Dave
Hey Patty and Dave welcome. I touched on the phases in another thread but here's a few more comments. The earliest homes 1960-1965) were slump block homes and were smaller. The first 5 or 6 years Sun City homes targeted low to moderate income retirees and everything was about affordability. In 1965 there was a cement mason strike and they switched to wood frame construction. A change in leadership in mid 1965 brought a man by the name of John Meeker to the community. He quickly came to believe that for Sun City to succeed it had to be more than a cheap place to live. His role/goal was to build a community that seniors from all walks of life would find attractive. It wasn't about money or stature, but finding people who wanted more from life as they aged. He was a genius and no one man had more to do with Sun City's success than John. Virtually every phase of Sun City became bigger and better than the ones opened earlier. Better yet, the community centers became the centerpiece in each phase and he appointed them in ways that made people understand it wasn't about the home they were buying, but the way of life that came with it. We bought in Sun City at 51 and moved in the day we turned 55. You are moving in at the perfect age and the only scary thing is how fast time flies once you get here.
