Read an editorial written by Tom Swenson in the SC Independent today. Guess the players are all for a PAC at Lakeview. First time I heard what they were for. I say awesome and if it works within budget constraints “ go for it”. I was under the impression they wanted the PAC at MV. Shows what I know or more what I don’t know.
Unbelievable! Maybe I missed something, but why didn’t they say this about 8 months ago. Just adds to a waste of time and energy.
I give TS credit, but you're right, Tom! When LV was first proposed, there was absolutely no desire to even discuss such an option. Maybe their support now helps move this project along.
I'm trying to stay away from some of these discussion but the rub with the MV project was always going to be the down time. The Players understood the problems and were looking for and at alternatives, none made sense and all were really costly. The Players wouldn't survive with two years and no venue and no performances. Lakeview was always the best location but they understood the delays of moving the project and waiting for the Lakeview remodel was unrealistic. I would speculate Tom's switch was predicated on a couple of things; by preserving the existing auditorium at MV, the Players would have a performance venue even with the construction going on at there. I know there's been several proposals for a free-standing theater at Lakeview that could be done before the rest of the project started. The new GM and board are open and willing to move quickly (look at the softball club house) and there are areas at Lakeview that could accommodate a free-standing PAC that could be built without disrupting the rest of the center. Don't you just hate when logical solutions are discussed by the adults in the room who are looking for answers to the challenges faced?
It will be interesting to see more accurate cost estimates on a new build at Lakeview and a rebuild at MV. Maybe someone in the room has such estimates? I have seen and heard some estimates. As a matter of fact, Marlene said a new build would cost twice a rebuild. So if true, $10 million spent on new building at Lakeview equates to $5 million rebuild at MV. Something has got to give here. So in conclusion, it will be interesting to see more accurate cost estimates. More shall be revealed, I hope!
Marlene's "a new pac will cost twice as much" I believe is based on a $13.1M rebuild of the MV auditorium vs a 20,000 + sq. Ft. PAC. The current estimate of $12.7M for a new PAC is based on 10,000 sq. Ft. PAC. Sun City West's theater is about 9,900 sq.ft.
Understood Paul and thanks. So my thinking says a rebuild at MV of 10,000 sq ft would be around $6 million. So yes, let’s move on and get some more accurate estimates and bids.
