I - like Josie - expected to see lots of discussion regarding the Community Space.

Is this a case of ..... "be careful what you wish for"?

(idiom. used to tell people to think before they say that they want something and to suggest that they may not actually want it.)
('Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it' means that what one desires is not necessarily what will make one happy. It also means that once you obtain something that you once wished for, having it may have negative consequences that were unexpected.)

Hmmm? I seem to have missed the notice of the Board Meeting where this was decided?

It was in my email. Maybe restless member rumblings caused a quick fix behind the scenes? It does not appear close to what was wanted. Seating for 6. Dart Games, Card Table, Pool table. Not exactly a place to mingle and meet. No room capacity number.

But now if it's brought up again it can be stated we were given a community room. Very savvy!

Posted on Nextdoor as well. 1 response. I doubt SC will go away, but I do think it will deteriorate, especially with new BNSF and the increase of the homeless and crime. Most "unique" things/places outgrow their usefulness. Novelties don't tend to live long. Anyone who drives through Phase 1 can see the difference.

Hmmm? And when, exactly, was there an open meeting with the Membership to discuss a Community room with the Board, and perhaps what it should include?

I seem to have missed that meeting!

So right FYI, no meeting, it appeared.

I still think the BOD got wind of this and it appeared. Now if people say anything they can say they made it happen! 2 comments from ND, names redacted.

    • Better than nothing but we need more.
    • What? No coffee, tea, or snacks??

Yeah, but if this was a Board decision, a meeting would have had to have been called, a motion would have had to been made, it had to be discussed, debated, and voted on at a meeting!

So even changing the way furniture is laid out and adding chairs has to have a vote? Just curious because our board at Sun Health did not require that. We were constantly changing up offices and meeting rooms.

It could come under BP10. Created for the enjoyment and use of the members. Things done under BP10 don’t require anything except board approval.

Just read it and I agree. My money is on they heard, they made a room and now they are done. Kind of funny that Dart Games and seating along with a TV were all mentioned here. Sorry but after the library and deferred maintenance fiascos I am a tad skeptical.

Well...you just said it! Things done under BP-10 requires board approval!

Isn't the entire Board required to vote for approval? Doesn't that require a meeting?

Could they have called an executive session, or are there ever informal meetings with just the board. I am curious because this board is not the same as the other not for profit boards I sat in on.

Executive Session is typically used for specific purposes such as personnel issues or contract items. Not for just a simple issue like this.

Look, bottom line is, they will have an excuse no matter what I think. They always do!

Just seems that the Membership should have been included in the process? So much for transparency. Like the old saying goes, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission."

There are regular meetings that involve the board that doesn’t require advertising or approval from the members. In order to conduct the daily business of the directors, meetings are held to discuss the needs of the business. This does not require a formal board meeting to accomplish. When the new qualifications were discussed and approved for the new GM, that’s the need of the business. There would have been no meeting agenda posted. I would think in order to run the business of the RCSC, decisions would need to be made, outside of required board meetings. This is Title 10, not Title 33, where every decision needs a vote of the membership. I happen to believe that if a case of lightbulbs needed to be ordered, the board could accommodate without the requirement of a meeting. Same holds true for allocation of space and resources. BP 10 allows the board leeway in those decisions, without the need of a meeting. Approval by the board can be made via email if necessary.
And yes, it would have been nice to have been asked what our opinion was.

Thanks Tom and Carole. You confirmed my thoughts. I do have a couple of points, no need to answer, just thoughts. There is not even a water cooler that I can see in that room. They say feel free to bring food and drinks, but is there a restroom with a sink and soap to wash hands? I don't even see a trash can to dispose of cans, bottles, food containers. Never been to Fairway, so I don't know. There used to be 6 pool tables in that room according to Emily (mentioned above) so I would assume they would have asked if the folks that used that room minded if they removed 4 of them. That seems really odd to me, but then a lot of things our elected leaders do seem odd. A "community room" for gatherings and meeting people should have seating for more than 6. Le Sigh! I just pay my dues yearly and now that they have my PIF I don't matter much.

Just my opinion. Have a blessed evening.

Emily I love your always positive attitude, however that is/was not the point of this effort. How is a community room with seating for approximately 15 chairs going to accommodate a community with approximately 37K people. I realize not all 37k will want to use the room, but what if 50 do?

Tom, I think you could learn from what a judge once told me when I was arguing for a long date continuance. I did not receive the long date I wanted and the judge told me that when you receive part of what you wanted you should accept it and STF up. You have the beginnings of a community room, does it really make any difference how you got here? Take what you received and STF up. Live to fight another day.
