Several years back while on the board for the Sun City Home Owners Association (SCHOA), I wrote a magazine to help stimulate membership. It was totally cool because we asked people to help stuff it in bags and deliver it. Over three hundred people joined us in this massive undertaking to insure one was dropped on every doorstep in Sun City. Worked like a charm and we got almost instant buy in. But I drift as I am want to do. The point here is I did an article on how Sun City works. I likened it to electricity; most folks living here don't understand it, they just want to be able to turn on the light and are comfortable with the fact it comes on. My concern is; is that enough? Years back when DEVCO left (1978) residents were more deeply involved. Through those early years when the hard decisions were being made, there were always way more candidates for the RCSC board than there were open spots. Elections brought out 50% plus of the population to vote. Issues were what got people elected, not simply because they said they'd take the position no one else wanted. We've moved away from that ownership. Lots of reasons for it, I could list a dozen without really trying. But those reasons simply become excuses. Not to say some aren't valid, but in reality, we absolutely have to get those coming to Sun City better aware of why when they throw the switch the light comes on. Sun City is a community unlike most others. We are unique in that our entire infrastructure is built upon ownership in the process and the ultimate outcomes. I know life evolves and is always changing but we are truly captains of our own destiny. The beauty of Sun City is we have the ability to manage that change if we are just willing to do our part. It doesn't have to be a lot, if we each do a little it is amazing what can get done. During the 50th anniversary we celebrated our past and looked to the future. There's no question it will shine bright...but only if each of us takes on that responsibility of ownership and is willing to give back what they can.
Like you are reading my mind E: the video we shot will include some of that. In fact it is geared to younger seniors. I think people will like it and we will continue to update and upgrade based on suggestions from folks just like you.
With electricity there has to be some way to keep the current going and then channeled for use. Think that's where we could use some help. People got fired up for the 50th, then it comes and goes. A lot of meetings and committees get like that too but there has to be some better ways to keep people plugged in on a less intermittent basis. Can we strategize during the coffee mtg.? Are you still planning to have one in July?
Yup, but it looks like our best bet might be to just congregate at the Lakeview coffee shop. What days work for folks?
