Chasing fire trucks (sort of)

[IMG] Are you one of those people who follows fire trucks just to see what’s happening? I’m not really, (though I do have few notable exceptions) but on the other hand when presented with a pillar of cloud by day and one of flame by night it is pretty difficult not to follow. Trailing it becomes an almost religious duty. Spotting such a pillar on the afternoon/evening/night of February 23, 2014 (or so my camera tells me) a few of us set off doing exactly that, track it down. What we discovered was a raging inferno (please . . …. wait until you see the pictures) located perhaps 10 or 15 miles southwest of Sun City. We got as close as we dared, joined in with a small group of other folks all OMGing away, took some pictures and came home. It turned out to be (as I remember, feel free to chip in with the real story) maybe a landscaping business whose huge pile of wood chips had more or less spontaneously burst into flame, throwing up the column that we spotted from far away. Anyway, my mad attempt to get my Sun City history file out of my external hard drive and onto the WWW has dredged this evening up and now you can ask yourself, “Where was I that night?” My night ended up here:

I should probably include a teaser, so,

    So that didn't work.

Since you've wandered beyond just RCSC activities......perhaps a photo of Banner Boswell, at least one of the fire stations(noting there are 3) and the Sun City Posse would be good publicity for Sun City.

You'll be busy keeping up to all these suggestions but you asked for it!

P.S. Maybe a photo of the SCHOA Office would be good since they're such an important force in keeping our home values up.

All good ideas, but keeping me busy only happens if I do them and 110 degrees is not much incentive to get out & about. Also the point of wikipedia, and thus my editing there is not just to give SC good publicity but to show to the rest of the world what is here.

This has real possibilities. PAtly it becomes "How photogenic is the subject?" and a lot of the buildings around here (opinion) are not very.

Good discussion because one of the struggles i have had with the magazines i have done has always been the photo’s. It doesn’t help that i’m not a picture guy. Don’t take many and don’t even try to pretend to know what is and isn’t right. When i took courses on writing and editing, the one thing i did learn was a good picture could make or break an article.

Back in the day, we didn’t have the luxury of our phones being camera’s. The digital world has changed all of that. That said, a good piece of camera equipment and a trained eye still make all the difference in the world. Great job carp on capturing the essence of Sun City from the lens point of view.

Maybe one of these days i will take a wack at putting something in Wiki that is less rigid and more emotional.

I look forward to seeing what that turns out to be and likely will remove it if you do not include a source or reference.

Well that was quick. Forget the post to wiki. I love the fact we are recognized as a census designated place, how very enlightening. I read Trolanders book (one of the cites you are talking about) when it was released and found it to be way too clinical. The funny thing is the research i am doing as i write the articles is way beyond extensive, but the idea i would have to link to them is preposterous. Most of the stuff isn't online and i sure as hell am not going to build a site to get it on wiki.

The information the museum has is "one of a kind" special. Someday our goal is to build a site with that data available to the consuming public. For now, people will just have to trust i'm not making stuff up.

Wikitraining lesson #4. If wikipedaia allowed everyone who said that they were an expert in some particular field just edit it we would have the pyramids being built by aliens, the Lost Tribe of Israel wandering around North America thousands of years ago and a lot worse. However it is not necessary to use a web site as a source, I primarily use my "library" as my source and I've done something like 30,000 edits (I just found a counter, 36,190 live edits, whatever that means) and would be more than happy to help you out.
