Embarrassed to admit this but yesterday was the first time I have been in the bowling and billiards area at Bell. Knew it was there but never took the time to see it. Very impressive facility. Carom billiards is one of the things on my bucket list. Amazing what we have available for our $500 a year.
Have you been to the billiards rooms at Fairway & Lakeview? So much is offered so close to wherever you live in Sun City.
Speaking of Bell Center....I believe it was the Lawn Bowl greens at Bell that was featured on NBC Channel 12 local news last night. Great to see Sun City get a bit of the spotlight!
Not sure if it was Bell or Lakeview aggie, but you are right, it was good to see the promotion...even if it was a week late. The Bell Center was to be the showcase Fix. Meeker went crazy as he started building and cost overruns were the norm rather than the exception. So much so that as they moved north in phase 3 the plan was to drop the Marinette Center to help defray their losses. Oops, the folks up that way went crazy and threatened a law suit so they built a small center to shut them up. Here's the kicker about Bell, and it is almost tragic to remind people about it. There was to be a performing arts theater in the corner of the Bell lot where the farmers market is Thursday's. Sadly, the 1700 person project was scrapped because of the cost. Imagine, had it been built, we would have avoided the 40 battle about building a theater and not be looking at Mountainview the way we are now. Parking at Bell would have easily accommodated large crowds and all these years we would have been enjoying plays in wonderfully awesome conditions. Damn.
It's also tragic that the disbanded Long Range Planning Committee also recommended that the performing arts center be located at the southeast corner of the Bell Rec lot. There were drawings, parking requirements from the County and much enthusiasm over designing the perfect multi-purpose center for meetings, performances, movies and forums all with comfortable seating. This was a big disappointment when it wasn't brought forward for approval by the then RCSC Board. I can't see how Mountain View will be anywhere near as good as what was suggested by the LRP Committee before it was gouged by golf, golf & more golf expenses.
Don't even get me started on that one aggie. The motion to get rid of the long range planning committee was made by the golfers on the board and supported by the golfers on the board with encouragement (i'm being kind) from the GM. Once we had gotten the golf course redesigns on those three courses from Gary Brawley (ya but we got a really good price on them), it was virtually carved in stone they would get done. They just needed to clear the way from community involvement as to the other needs or wants of the community by turning the decision making process over to the board without those pesky suggestions. As long as i am ranting; the Lakes Club has a theater space already there. Not sure on the seating potential, but there was nothing but space to work with. Now we are looking at proposals for a 400 seat theater at Mountainview and if that's the case, it will always be viewed as a project that should have been bigger. Parking is the demon that will haunt us there as the county sets the number of parking spaces to meet the capacity of the various amenities on the footprint.
I think the word "awestruck" describes the photo...."To be awestruck is to be full of complete wonder, amazement, or dread for something." All which fits the relationship between RCSC Cardholders and the BOD. You'll know the mad-face when you see it.
