Let's say I found a table, maybe something like this - http://parr.com/blog/Puzzle-Coffee-Table/ , that I think would be very cool in a game room or something. But the last woodworking project I did (building a poker table) was many years ago. Would I be able to find a patient person in one of the the woodworking clubs to advise me if I wanted to make this myself? And (besides the location) what is the difference between the different woodworking clubs (Woodworking Club of Fairway Center, Lakeview Woodworking Club, Woodworking Club of Bell Center) or the different ceramics clubs, or metal clubs, etc?
Yup V, they love to get their hands on newcomers in the woodshops. They've got your usual cast of wood-butchers, but also have several very talented people at all 3 of the woodworking clubs. Most people join in based on a proximity to their home, but there are differences in the three clubs. Obviously Fairway is the oldest club (with the newest complete facility. The Lakeview club has some of the more detailed equipment, though is clearly the oldest physical plant and a somewhat challenging entryway given the ramps to get down to the clubroom (though the members were up in arms when we talked about some ideas to move them). The Bell club was newly built in early 2000 and was just remodeled two years ago. Very nice and open and right next door to the metal shop (lots of the men and women belong to both). I would always encourage new residents to visit each club to get a feel from a personal perspective. Some of the clubs can be a little cliquish, but it really depends on who is monitoring and if you are in the right place at the right time. No matter where you would join, there will be some folks you hit it off with and others who aren't there looking for friends.
