Escrow closes on Monday. We signed everything yesterday afternoon and dropped them in the FedEx'ed overnight bin. This is going to be a tough 9 months. NOBODY at my work knows we have started acting on our exit strategy. At my age, and in this business, it's dangerous to let them know you have set an end date. This is an "at will" employment state, and even this company has been known to tell folks to just go ahead and go. If you know what I mean.
It means if they walk by your cubicle and decide they don't like the smell of your perfume, they can send you packing; no questions asked. The beauty of "free enterprise" eh?
Exactly - there doesn't have to be a reason, on either parties part. But BP - the cubicle is dead, long live the open space. We can collaborate for a more meaningful work experience in an open space. Yeah that, or we can just fly our mini quadcopters more skillfully because we have better sight lines.
I work in the technology field, at this point there is no union. If there were, Jeff Bezos wouldn't be so smug (no, I don't work at Amazon but I know a lot of folks who do or who have and they say the NY Times piece is spot on). For workers that are unionized (teachers, first responders, boeing technicians, and a host of others) yes, they have a very big say. If you didn't read the article, http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/16/t...g-big-ideas-in-a-bruising-workplace.html?_r=1 And some commentary http://www.geekwire.com/2015/amazon...nyt-story-some-people-dont-belong-here-maybe/
CO is a right to work state and they may not be able to get rid of you if your feet smell, but your employer can still easily show you the door. My department is being eliminated very soon so I have to find another job. Two years from now I wouldn't care, but right now too many things going on financially. We have contemplated on selling now, heading to Sun City and figuring out the rest. With our equity we would not have a house payment there so a lesser job would be doable. Pretty hard these days for us older folks to land decent paying employment, they forget we have lots of experience and look for the young and inexperienced.
Bruce - I can relate. Just last week one more senior officer announced his early retirement. I sit next to a group of older guys who will all be out of work in two weeks - outsourced their stuff to IBM. I used to think they got rid of the older employees because we made more $$, that is no longer the case. New hires make comparable (or more) salaries. I made the decision to not relearn my job for the 5th time and I have now aged out. I'm good with that, I'm tired of this and I am ready to move on.
Yup, I am so ready to move on to the next chapter, not quite aged out yet though, just a couple more years. Working for Cabela's is my dream job.
Sorry to hear it BW; it all sucks as I sit watching from the sidelines. I won't get all political, because both parties have turned a blind eye to working men and women. The D's do a better job of talking the talk but when it comes to walking it, a whole other story. There was a time in this country when workers meant something to their employers. Today, they are just another expendable asset. I spent a lifetime working and thinking I could make a difference. Foolishness; as organized labor was far more interested in preserving the organization, than they were those in it. Sad, because as unions have been kicked to the curb, so have workers. The downward slide has been monumental and the worst thing is, there's no end in sight. It's exactly why Sun City was so appealing to me. The concept of a collective where we all did our part (big or small) was unlike anything outside the walls. It's why I have been so emphatic of telling the Sun City story, the history and the importance of knowing how we work. We want/need people to move here who want to carry that forward. I hate to say it BW, but leaving it all behind and starting anew might just be the best thing you can do...especially if Sun City is your destination. PS. Huge Cabela's (aren't they all?) just down the road from us across from the Cardinal's stadium.
Bill you always manage to end in a Sun City advertisement... I love it. But truth be told I'm thinking you are right, leaving CO behind and making AZ my new home is very appealing. I have one solid opportunity right now that if it pans out will keep us here for a bit longer. If it all falls apart next month as predicted the option of selling out now will be very attractive. I've been checking out Sun City since May 2013 and that is the place I want to be.
Good news here V. With your pods coming this week I was able to hire this guy with a samurai sword to stand guard till you get in. :triumphant: BTW, I got him really cheap, but the neighbors may be a little ****y.
Thanks Bill, We get in late on Wednesday. Should I dispatch the Ninja to your house then or wait until 3:00/4:00 a.m.?
