Looks like we'll be attending the new owners orientation next month. I just went through the house and to quote our realtor, "it's awesome." We just need to finish dotting all our i's and crossing all our t's (is that one of those sayings that will be obsolete soon?), and wait for the Aug 31 closing. YEA!!!
Thanks Everyone.... Cynthia, No, because of our ages (59 and 53 (I'm the 53 )) we need to wait until December so the 59 can hit 59 1/2 (bahahahahahaha). Continuing the TMI, we have 2 weeks in KY for my nieces wedding in Feb/March, and then the awesome Ft. Lauderdale to Seattle Panama Canal cruise in April. When we get back from the cruise is when I will give my 2 week notice and THEN we move, and put our Seattle house on the market. But, we have 3 trips planned to SC between now and then.
I'm going to miss it too, Cynthia, won't be there 'til November, aiming for the 10th. How often do they hold orientations?
Buying before you retire, or leave your current residence can be tough. I hate to say this, but with each visit to SC, it gets a little more challenging to head back to where you call home. We bought at 51 and came to SC as often as we could. We found that old adage, absence makes the heart grow stronger to be 100% true. I don't want to say it brought tears to our eyes to have to leave, but darned close. The good news is, the decision to buy at that age changed my life. I was a classic type A workaholic who felt we were put on this earth to work; it defined me. Discovering Sun City, I came to understand there was so much more to life than what we did. And while each of us is different, I suspect as each day passes, you'll find yourself longing to be part of what we have all found...a better way to live.
Hey Lin: The RCSC puts on one massive new residents orientation in January; you'll be here for that one. The Sun City Home Owners Association (SCHOA) used to be a part of the annual one the RCSC does, but a decision was made to change it up last year. The organizations and clubs are all invited to be in the Sun Dial Auditorium, but they aren't on the stage and part of the presentation. Exposure is critical for SCHOA (as membership is voluntary), so they decided to do their own orientations (not sure if they are quarterly or semi-annually). In any event, the one J_V mentioned in Sept is SCHOA's. I would encourage any new owner to take in any of them they can get to. Sun City is unlike any place else you have lived and a crash course on the community and how it works is an added bonus for understanding it. The other not to be missed for newbies is the RCSC annual membership meeting in February. We used to have 4 membership meetings per year that were sparsely attended and we reduced it to one large meeting. Free food is a must have at Sun City events and for those looking for more, they even give out tons of information.
I wonder if there is much yet I don't know about the structure of SC that I would learn at a new resident orientation. Between reading various websites and posts here I don't know what else there is to learn about. I understand how it was crucial before the internet but now I see it mostly as a social event. I do plan to be in SC for a week in Sept but I'm not sure when. Where is the new orientation date listed?
If nothing else we will begin seeing "who's who in the zoo". I really hope there is more I can learn, right now I am at the "what do I do now" phase.
