Does it get any better than this?

Every day in Sun City, i mean literally every day there is something i find to marvel about. Most often it's minor things that just bring a smile to my face. Today, was different; so much so i went home and got the ipad and went back to get a picture or two.

I was out in my golf car with my two girls (standard poodles) and as i drove by the gorgeous new electronic sign at Fairway a blurb caught my eye. The message said they were installing free seatbelts on golf cars at Bell today.

Ever the curious one, i drove through the Bell parking lot to see if there were any takers. This isn't the first time this has been done, but with the recent golf car fatalities, it was once again timely and much needed. There was a considerable lineup and this was after they had beed installing them for 3 or 4 hours.

The event was a joint venture between the Retirement Community Association of Sun City (RCASC), the Posse and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. The RCASC has roots that go way back as they lead the charge to stop incorporation (but that's another story for another time).

The best estimate was they would install some 400 belts by events end. For those who don't know, older golf cars didn't come with seat belts. What's so cool is they would install the drivers belt for free and putting in the passenger side was only $10 if you wanted it. 5 years ago we installed seats belts in mom's care and it was $65.

This is the kind of thing that makes Sun City so special. We live in a world where almost everything is about making the almighty dollar. These kinds of things go on all the time within these white walls, it's why we are different and unique from almost everywhere else.

Here's a couple of pics from the event:

Curious to note E you won't find anything in Jubilee about RCASC. I think the writers tended to downplay just how contentious a couple of these issues were. Don't get me wrong, they mentioned the incorporation battle and about the "mini-Berlin wall" issue, but nowhere near in depth as to the amount of rancor that existed.

As far as the Sun City Foundation, it was one of my more frustrating efforts. As president, our goal was to elevate it to the next level, but just couldn't get the traction to move it further along. It does a great job in what it does, but it could be so much more.

Kudos to the Vintage Vehicle Club of Sun City for their support.

Thanks for letting the SC Arizona community know there are organizations that do these types of events. I look forward to learning more about the success of this as well as any future endeavors.

Hey chara, welcome to the site. One of the things some of my old internet friends talked about was our ability to tell our stories. Unfortunately most people aren't willing or don't understand how important that is. Sun City is the classic example of failing to share just how wonderful a community it is and why.

Of late a friend has been researching those early Sun City years and the fight to stave off incorporation was butt ugly. The founders of RCASC were the leaders behind stopping it. Without their efforts, Sun City would just be another city stuck in the trapping of city government and the bureaucracy that comes with it.
