Does anyone know if the new Sun Bowl dog park was started? I didn't read it in the sun views but before they had said they planned to start in July (I think).

I don't know about the dog parks, but I heard from a lawn keeper at Lakeview this morning that there may be an opening for moderators at the dog park and that park will be gated so that only SC rec card holders can use it.

The dog park down south has been put on hold until we resolve some of the issues that have arisen at Duffeeland. We've had a few aggressive dogs who owners have been hesitant to control and some abbusive visitors who have come from outside of Sun City and think park rules don't apply to them.

We will be have an onsite monitor who will check rec cards and observe how people are controllig their pets so we can better understand the cost of another dog park in the community. Initially we were confident park users would police it themselves, but that may have been too much to ask.

A monitor will give us (the board) good feedback on what the parks needs truly are and if adding another fits within our budget. Clearly having a dog park is a nice addition to Sun City's amentiy package, but with it comes the responsibilities of running it well.

Too bad. The little dogs need a safe place to play apart from the big dogs. If not another park I wish they would give a small space at Duffeeland for the little ones. I hope some dog people can stick up for this because it's much more than a nice amenity. We can't let small one out in the backyard because of the coyotes and they also have no place to play off leash. Please some small dog people put in your two cents. Until I'm a owner in SC my words, of course, don't count.

Of course small can be aggressive, but fights between a small dog and another small dog is not as life threatening as between a small and large. But the main point is, many small dogs are afraid of large dogs and won't go to those parks. And rightly so. Someone here, not sure who it was, had a small dog attacked by a large dog at Duffeeland and the small one is too afraid now. Personally, I've been to many dog parks and have yet to see one in this day that does not have a section for small dogs; it's the norm now in dog parks everywhere. There will be some fights in dog parks, that is just the nature of dogs in groups, but they must be attended to immediately and those dogs that continue to fight must be prohibited.

That was me Cynthia....one of my Cavaliers was attacked by another dog, much larger than he is. I was told that dog is known for being aggressive, yet the owner continues to bring it to the park and I guess eventually it accepts the new dogs. Not a great welcome for new people to the park. I think a monitor is a great idea I hesitate to support a separate area for small dogs because running free from one end to the other is what dogs come there for.

This is just an idea, but the Sun City in Florida (sun city center) has several dog parks (small and large) and they are monitored by the dog club. In fact the dog club mostly exists for the dog parks. They charge a minimal yearly fee (I think $10) to join and they use that money for upkeep of the parks. People need to belong to the club to use the dog parks. I'm not sure how they monitor it, they are more isolated so I'm sure less non-SC people would show up, but if anyone is interested in how they manage and monitor it they might be a good resource.
