The project below has been completed. What's your take on it? The Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) contractor has completed the 107th Avenue and Oakmont Drive Traffic Signal Installation Project. Here's the official description" "The MCDOT contractor performed construction activities associated with the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of 107th Avenue and Oakmont Drive. Work consisted of installing traffic signal equipment, pole foundations, poles, mast arms and signal heads. Additional traffic safety improvements include the installation of new dedicated turn lanes, center median modifications, curb and gutter, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, emergency preemption equipment for fire trucks and pole-mounted traffic detection devices for “real time” traffic management."
I'll let ya know what I think when we get back to Sun City....I go through that intersection multiple times a week....I never saw a real need for it, but will reserve judgement till I have driven through it a few times. I will be curious what others think,
I need to get down there and see how it affects pedestrians. I fear it hasn't changed the foot traffic problem since plans showed nothing about sidewalk from 107 connecting to sidewalk surrounding store, so fear there is still dangerous competition with the vehicles, but will wait for a walk-through once it gets cooler. Still wish Fry's would've bought out the gas station on the northwest corner instead of that sitting vacant while traffic is congested with the one they did build contending with the Kentucky colonel and all the shoppers.
I like the improvement. Makes sense and is easy to get around. I'm sure the residents close to the intersection are happy about it.
Hadn't thought about location of Frys gas station. Yep. That old gas station is one of the eyesoars on Grand. Also, how about the vacant lot with chain fence around it on the Northwest corner of Thunderbird and Del Web. I think a fastfood place would do well there. As for new stoplight. I haven't really noticed any difference.
Agree about the T-bird chain link eyesore but I seem to rem. it was zoned for medical office, but could be wrong on that. An eatery would be nice, but I'd opt for something with a little less in and out traffic and the intersection could get zooey, but doubt there'd be enough parking space. Guess that's one of the reasons it's sitting there.
Going southbound on Del Webb Bl across Grand Av on the way to Frys or the gas station, it is faster to turn left on the green arrow and enter the parking lot from Grand Av instead of going to the Oakmont & Del Webb/107th Av intersection. The signals at the Grand Av & Del Webb Bl/107th Av intersection and the Oakmont & Del Webb/107th Av intersection are not synchronized which means that sometimes you find yourself waiting at Oakmont Av to turn left into Frys parking lot when there is a red light but no traffic at all. Waiting with no cross traffic makes the red light seem interminable and makes one yearn for the stop sign instead.
I neither like nor dislike. It doesn't seem to cause an problem except that you have to stop for red light.
The joy of being retired is that I am never in a hurry anymore. (Some exceptions ) The light at Oakmont seems to change pretty fast. I like the clean look and the fact that it is a safer intersection.
I think the new road and intersection looks good and certain is a "working well" way to get the traffic moving safely and at a nice pace. There have been many times in the past that that area would get so congested with the traffic - -with Fry's shoppers, etc. I think this was a helpful way to improve on this road-:welcoming:
It's still a nightmare for a pedestrian. Sidewalk disappears as you try to walk in from 107th and you're forced to compete with traffic or fall in the drainage ditch--neither option appeals to me.
You are talking about a crosswalk that would be on the private commercial property. The owners of the center should be contacted and maybe Fry's would be willing to put some pressure on them if enough people contact them. Maybe someone could set up a table for signatures outside the store to gather support??
