First off, I'm not going to say what insurance carrier I have, so please don't ask. Approximately six weeks ago, a third party contractor for my insurance company came around unannounced and took photos of my home. No phone call, no text, no nothing. They left a blank door hanging card with my insurance carrier's name and nothing on the card was filled out. I called my insurance carrier and the agent stated that this was common and that they are looking to be sure that my home is properly rated and coverage is sufficient. Fast forward 6 weeks and a form letter arrives stating that they will need additional information and I will to contact my agent to review my Coverage A limits. The house construction type is Masonry. It's a block home. The third party contractor decided to change the type to Frame. "This change may affect your premium." Yeah, no s&$#. I called the agent and they responded that the third party contractors are doing this on their own, and the agent said the mistake would be corrected. So should you find a stranger roaming around on your property and taking photos, this may be what is happening. You have been warned.
I'm fine with drones. They're everywhere now. I don't love them either, but LE uses them over their respective cities. I see them over El Mirage and Surprise and up and down the Agua Fria river and Grand Avenue. I don't want an unannounced stranger roaming around on my property. That's a liability issue. Not to mention a third party company where I don't know how they vet their people. I did ask the agent what was the name of the company and the agent said they could not tell me.
Ask the agent if the insurance policy allows third party contractors to roam in the insuring agreements. Is your property insurance up for renewal in the new few months? This could be a case of trespass and a possibility of fraudulent misrepresentation by the contractor which would open the door for a claim against their license and disciplinary action if the mistake is not corrected. Who at the insurer authorized this or is the person a “cowboy?” A drone flying over you residence at a relative low altitude would be a violation of your airspace. Keep us updated as I have been visited by a bunch of roofing contractors lately who want to give me “free” inspections of my roof and are much to insistent about it and they eventually mention insurance. The alarm bells go off and I tell them I was in insurance for30 years (accurate but not necessarily truthful) and they then spout the finer pints of insurance that way too much for a normal roofing contractor to know or be involved with.
The third party adjustors and inspectors are perfectly legal nowadays and stated in the policy, via changes and endorsements. It used to be in the past that the large companies only used contractors when there was a CATloss. And yes, the policy comes up for renewal in several months. Was my reclassification a "mistake" or an attempt to put my property into a higher rate for mo money, who knows? We're going into a potentially very bad fire season this summer. The insurance companies are looking for reasons to drop people or to charge them a lot higher rates. You see what happened in the recent past in other states. When I got the notice I thought it was a cancellation at first. We've been with this company for a long time and have all our insurance bundled with them. Never (knock wood) had a claim. I will post here if I receive more aggravation or a significant increase in rates for absolutely no reason, other than greed. It would have been nice if the agent had the common courtesy to give me a heads-up about the third party contractor, especially considering our history. I'm disgusted. Don't answer the door to those (in the South we used to call them jacklegs) people soliciting in the neighborhoods. I don't trust them or their motives in our senior community. Please be safe.
