Thanks E, nice article and great pictures. I've used so many of the museum's over the years and am always thrilled to see new ones. I especially liked the large bike club photo with the three-wheelers and the one with the old couple walking the sidewalk hand in hand. The one that threw me though was the guy sitting in what i would guess is a self-contained sauna? Odd. One of the often missed marketing tools was the amazing array of magazines that covered Sun City in the 60's and 70's. Of course, magazines back then were the equivalent of the internet today. Virtually every national magazine of any note (and many with little or no note) did a feature story complete with photographs and a journalist making the trek to cover the community. It's one of those things that has always struck me; how simple life can be in a self-contained community.
I first came to Sun City in 1974 on a solo cross country motorcycle trip (my aunt had moved here) and then returned in 1976 with two fraternity brothers on another cross-country motorcycle trip. These photos take me back to those days...
I wondered the same thing E. My first thought was that must be the one of the many Lakes Club bars, but then it struck me, the photo was from 1970 and it hadn't been built yet. Most likely it was from the Kings Inn which had opened as the Hiway House. Unfortunately i have never been inside either.
It was Jerry's in Youngtown which had just opened when the original article was published. It was very elegant and very popular. Later it became Ritter's Chalet which remodeled to lighten up the place although they kept the paneled walls and most light fixtures. The Sun CIty fire station is now at the location. https://www.flickr.com/photos/timetravelnow/7880759838/in/photostream/
Hey folks, I have a proposal in the works to build a lagoon saloon behind the bowling alley where the old maintenance/administration buildings are. The proposal includes a wraparound patio overlooking the lagoon and minigolf/tennis. Its in the early stages of development and any feedback would be welcome. Of course, such a place would have to fit within the site plan for Lakeview when it is developed. John
