Sun Health owned the strip malls? I know they owned the Nursing school property as well as their hospice facility by JiMichaels but sold around 2004. I worked in the CEO's office of Sun Health from 2001 to 2008 and the attorney who was also very involved with Devco. That is something I will have to look into.

Sun Health owned the Medical Facilities with the Sun Health name. They did not own "land" in Sun City. Here is the info for the Barnet Delaney center on Webb and T-Bird.

I guess the SC Museum would have that info, however if what you are saying is accurate Sun Health sold everything they owned to Banner Health in 2008. Banner did not want Webb but the govt stepped in and said all or nothing.

Interesting discussion Carole and one we had the opportunity to address while serving on the board. The shopping center on Del Webb Blvd and Thunderbird (by Duffeeland) was offered to the RCSC at a great price (the owner just wanted out). Sitting on both sides of Del Webb Blvd, it would have turned the RCSC into being in the rental property business, as there was no way we needed both pieces of property for our purposes. We never got very far into the discussion as none of us (board members) or GM saw the value in such a large purchase.

We know that same property was bought by Perkins/Delaney and the center looks much nicer, but the shops have changed drastically. There is more medical, just like the center on the corner of 99th and Thunderbird. While some of you bemoan those changes, the increased office space has made visiting them far more comfortable. Being crammed into tiny waiting rooms is not the case any longer.

I would and have argued the additional medical services are at least as important as a grocery store or "fine dining." The reality is those using the services they provide are often more than likely the residents who either cannot or will not want to leave the community. For those who don't remember, building the Boswell Memorial hospital was a life changing, dare i say life saving event? That opening was incentive for countless numbers of seniors to buy into Sun City.

The data shows us the importance of getting to a hospital quickly is literally the difference between life and death. It wasn't an accident both Sun City and Sun City West had hospitals within the walls of their community. In fact, it was a major aspect of the marketing of both. Many/most senior age restricted communities don't have the luxury of a hospital on their grounds. Plus, we have watched as new concepts in health care being added in empty store fronts which again is a value to living here.

The challenge for all of us is the ability to see the positives rather than harping on the negatives. I know the latest, worst version of ourselves is to be critical of everything. anything and anyone who doesn't agree with you. It always gets more clicks to be angry and resentful, but seeing the beauty in what we have is far more powerful than just pissing and moaning our lives away over perceived wrongs.

In my opinion we don’t need more medical facilities, we need small grocery stores, restaurants, shops featuring local crafts and a way to attract people to make the community a destination once again. And most importantly, promote the area as a place to live and thrive.

I agree with you, however it seems others don't. Our Sun City Historian didn't respond about Sun Health owning land back in the day. My research and memory says no, but to be sure I will have to wait till Monday to call my coworker who was very involved with Sun Health properties.

I still feel with our local and state politicians help, maybe we can get some new money and business interests, some new housing. and yes a prettier and more modern facilities in here. I do feel we are at risk of just being a low income housing community, and we all should be concerned about crime and safety. I would not mind having a more visible Sherriff office right here in SC, I think it would be a good deterrent for us to have one. Everyone reading these chat blogs should take the time and write to your county and state representatives for help. I am hoping we can get some large businesses to want to invest in SC. All ideas are open here.

So happy to be able to share ideas with others about how great Sun City could be. It would be a pleasure to share ideas with others who seek positive outcomes for the future of our community. I have a terrible sense of desire to start a new chapter for our great community moving forward. In my zeal to want to move forward with the needed changes for us, I forget that it takes time to get things moving in any direction. With new board members coming on board, and the learning curve associated with being new, once again, valuable time and momentum needs to be established. Here is wishing the best to the new board members and the needed resources to move forward with the governance of Sun City.
