FLASHBACK: "I Want What I Want When I Want It." Thread started by Bill Pearson, March 5, 2023 Excerpt “As i said before, i get it. Those of you who are members of the Players simply want what you want when you want it. Who cares if it cost 4o million dollars? Who cares about the long range success of the community? The argument that a theater is somehow Sun City's future success story and why we will survive is ludicrous. If the board gives in, we simply continue the long tradition of just giving whomever whatever it is they want without any kind of strategic or comprehensive plan in place. You'd think a community with a 25 million dollar yearly budget, an asset value of roughly 140 million dollars would have the capacity to do better than flying by the seat of their pants and just doing whatever whenever because someone moans the loudest, or there are people in high places who think they know better than the community at large.” ( Read through some of the thread …take one step forward, two steps back. Repeat. ) https://talkofsuncity.com/threads/i-want-what-i-want-when-i-want-it.4549/
Bill, Thanks for digging this out. Should have been available to all via the RCSC website. Did they mistate option 3? Isn’t that the SE corner? This architect seems very superficial if they made that mistake.
To the RCSC Board: Start now with Mountain View plans without a PAC. at that site. Do this without delay. Help the Players find an alternate site for their performances. It will probably be two years before they will need to vacate MV. It will take that long to get the architectural plans, bids, and begin construction. In the meantime, explore putting the PAC at Bell before deciding on Lakeview.
The fact they showed so many locations at Bell was disconcerting Mike. What it did was muddy the waters. The biggest point i looked for was this: Were there enough parking spaces at Bell...no matter which location of the 4 locations they chose? The answer was yes. Most of the rest of the cons were minutia while most of the pros were stunningly supportive of building there. Here's the quirky thing for me: I was curious about why not Bell and when i questioned the GM following the meeting he told me point blank to go look at the Tri-Arc presentation. If he hadn't said that, i would never have looked at anything other than the slides we saw of the 10 or so locations they studied (which told us nothing by the way). I know the Players have never been in favor of the Bell location. I don't know how they feel about the proposed Lakeview site. I know, given the quickly rising lot assessments, we need be mindful of anything we do, buy or build. If i have learned nothing else in life, timing is virtually everything. I know also this; the timing for any crazy new expenses will not be well received by the members. See you all a week from this Thursday at 9 am at the Sundial auditorium.
As I have said before, I don't think RCSC can build a PAC with its own funding unless it is a multipurpose space. It will probably take some outside money for a large part of the building expenses for a stand alone PAC. It could take a long time to locate and acquire that extra funding. If the Members want a PAC, there should be an opportunity to donate to one through a SC Foundation designated fund. If few people contribute to that, we will know that the Members aren't interested in that amenity. This controversy will not help the SC Foundation raise money for any project. Cooperation, not division, is needed on this project and others. Isn't compromise essential in most situations?
I'm not on Facebook so I can't post this, but I hope somebody and everybody who reads this will! We need to fill the auditorium in the same manner as we did for the Library leases. We need to back the Board into the corner, and let them know that in no uncertain terms, that we do not want the location of the PAC at Lake View to be determined unless or until they do a full development study for the complete renovation of the Lake View Rec Center and property. Please pass this along to everybody you know and to every Social Media venue that pertains to Sun City! Thanks.
Maybe I should reserve some of my mgmt judgement??? Potentially intentional in actually helping you?? I'll gladly repent.
One player did speak on Monday, and stated the Lakeview West site has many issues: long walking distance for handicap parking, no close by passenger drop off zone, no on site space for set construction, no access for 18 wheelers to unload traveling sets/wardrobes.
This is what you get when a building is not part of an overall plan for the site. I hope the Board puts the brakes on this decision.
