    Dave,
While I agree that grants would probably not fund projects covered in the CIF (delayed maintenance?) and Capital reserve, why couldn't the Foundation seek outside funding for PIF projects that are not in progress now? Some of them, such as Mountain View, have languished on the PIF for years and years. Perhaps a portion of the costs could be offset by grants, bequests, fundraising within our clubs, etc. Also, I understand that we probably wouldn't seek funding for expenses in our current operating budgets, but there could be future programming that would require staffing that might go through the operating budget. What funds or budgets are you thinking of for grants? You are right that we don't want to continually raise assessments that might be prohibitive to a large number of our Members. That should be our goal.

Janet, seeking outside funding for PIF projects could be dicey due to the cost of them. Securing partial funding would put the RCSC in a perpetual merry go round to keep the new in place before the old funding runs out. Nothing like seein rusting steel framing on a concrete slab. Also, we wouldn’t know the true cost until the architect’s estimate comes in which is used for the RFB. Also, what GC would bid a huge job if the money wasn’t already there as putting together a sizable bid would be a waste of time. Also consider if we went down this path what would happen to RCSC’s reputation.

I really think the KISS principal would apply here.

    Dave,
I think it is KISS "principle" not "principal". Maybe your spellcheck defied you.

I was speaking from my own experience with other Foundations and projects. Our hospital and hospital foundation just opened a $52 Million Field House in January, with no debt. Part of that building project was financed by a $13M grant from the federal infrastructure bill so it can be done without the dire consequences you portrayed.

Janet, it seems everything in my life has defied me.

I am not Pooh pooling your idea but without the architect’s estimate we couldn’t apply for grants and I admit that I am unfamiliar with time lines on grants from beginning to end. Maybe you could give some guidance on that. I also believe that requesting money for a hospital would process quicker than a rec center with or maybe with or without a PAC. Administration of the funds could be interesting as the would have to be sequestered as money is coming from two different sources to two different legal entities.

Sorry for this but my career required thinking of every possible problem which might or might not exist.
