This is always an interesting discussion as all organizations have documents with their mission spelling out their purpose. Many also have mission statements, that often leave me scratching my head asking, "really?" Goals are a wholly different animal and can be either short or long term. They should be quite succinct and once set, there should be both a plan(s) and yearly assessments to determine whether the organization is on track to accomplish them. Sadly, most don't think like that.

A Mission is a general statement of how you will achieve your vision i.e., "To do anything and everything lawfully necessary in the interest of the Members of the Corporation..."

    Goals
are statements of what needs to be accomplished to implement the strategy i.e., "To do anything and everything lawfully necessary in the interest of the Members of the Corporation..."

Personally, I don't see much difference between the two? The RCSC Mission has a continuous Goal, "To do anything and everything lawfully necessary in the interest of the Members of the Corporation..." for as long as the corporation is in existence!

So then, back in April, 2022 when the Board approved the purchase of the "Life Fitness Video-Console equipment or its equivalent, specifically 2 treadmills, 2 ellipticals, 2 stationary bikes and 2 recumbent bikes" why did we have a general manager stand-up at the podium and counter the decision of the board, and recommend that we not purchase such equipment? Does all he ever want to do is stash money away into Cash Reserves? Is that why so many Clubs continue to ask for the same thing year after year?

Seems a Town Hall style meeting is the perfect spot to get things out there and then afterwards folks could get into smaller interest groups and be encouraged to link up with appropriate committees or special project task forces, etc.

"To do anything and everything lawfully necessary in the interest of the Members of the Corporation..." is a good mission statement, but difficult to measure.

Goals are very important, but they must be measurable. There should be a timeline with regular intervals to measure progress. Some goals may require additional steps to clarify how to achieve them.

Hopefully ASU knows all of this and will not lead us down a path of platitudes. I have seen some very good mission statement and some that left you scratching your head as to what they mean. When I started on the school board, our mission statement sounded like one from a nursing home. Somehow the writers of it forgot that "learning" was an important part of a school's mission.

This is perhaps why all Club requests should be posted on the RCSC website for ALL to see along with the RCSC's intentions on addressing those requests.

It's time we ALL should be able to see which Clubs get preferential treatment. Which ones get pushed to the front of the line while others continue to request the same thing year after year.
