Please, please, please; I implore you to make sure you tag your animals, especially dogs. I spent about 20 minutes Sunday morning trying to convince two loose poodle mixes to come over to me, which they did not do. From what I could tell neither of them had a collar on so no tags of any kind; even if I was able to get a hold of one or both of them the best I could do is to corral them in our fenced in backyard, water them, and call animal control. It was a 100 degrees outside (at 11:34) in the morning. Those two dogs will die in this heat if they don't get some water or a hungry coyote will grab at least one of them for their meal. Please TAG your animals!!!! You shouldn't have them if you don't invest some money in identifying pets!!!
Even if you think your dog will never escape your home or your yard, it's best to make sure they have some kind of id on them.... our pups are chipped, but we stll have a tag on tbem with a cell phone number. A year ago a couple small dogs were hit by a car nearby. Although they had no tags one did have a chip and the vet was able to trace the owner. It took several days as the dog had changed owners.
Great reminder. Our little border collie mix has a tag. I hate to see dogs loose in this kind of weather.
They really should be chipped too. Collars and tags come off. They escape during a bath when you've removed the collar so many other ways you don't expect. Even though they love their homes dogs want to run and some with go fast. If mine see a squirrel they try to get it.
BTW, it's very easy to have them chipped. It's a tiny device put in with a syringe. Most rescue and shelters have a chip reader. Does anyone know how that works around Sun City, I assume to agencies have the readers?
I think we will look into getting Ivan chipped. The landscaper left our side gate wide open the other day and thankfully I thought to check it before letting him out. You never know. I think most vets can provide this service.
http://www.mirror-pole.com/collpage/pf_loveb/pfl_1.htm I found a link showing the little peach faced clowns nesting in a cactus. I just love their antics and it would be wonderful to see them buzzing around. Years ago we met a woman in Hollywood who raised parrots and she had a regular flock of various species land in her yard for treats every morning. There is also a documentary on the Conures of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. A group of people follow these birds and keep tabs on them. They have managed to survive there fairly well.
A gardener leaving the gate open by accident is one of the most common things I hear people say about the dog getting out. My gardener is great and knows how I worry about this, still, my dogs are never in the "dog yard" even when the gardener is there. He gets busy working and it's not his responsibility to watch out for my dogs.
The shelters need to have the readers too because that is the place people will take a lost pet. Before you chip, ask the closest shelter which chip they use. Unfortunately there are a few makes and the readers don't read all of them. Some have tried to move to a reader that reads all chips but I'm not sure it works. The chips are from businesses who might not want to cooperate with having the same chip reading. One of my dogs has 2 chips because when I got him from rescue they couldn't locate the supposed 1st chip.
I've always wanted to see a wild Love Bird. Had no idea Phoenix has a wild population. Even some large flocks. Los Angeles has many wild parrots, I see them often, but no Love Birds that I know of. The location map looks as if they might be moving toward SC.
If the heat does not get the little pet-darlings - - Be Careful - - the coyotes will ! ! ALWAYS watch your pet, keep on leash, and do not leave him alone, even in your own back yard !
Not only chip your dog, but if you move please update the monitoring company with your new address/phone information.
Anybody hear of alternatives to calling Animal Control? When I found a dog, and kept it for an afternoon to rehydrate it and calm it down, I called the Posse and they put me in touch with a local rescuer who picked the poor creature up and a few days later called me to tell me it was reunited bec. it had a chip. The county "shelter" is so over-crowded that having a dog picked up by them may not be best until other methods are tried since they have a fast-track to euthanasia. Think I'll ask Posse Commander on his forum.... UPDATE: POSSE CMDR RESPONDED IN HIS FORUM....
Most vets will check a stray for a chip for free, they probably won't keep the dog till the owner is notified.

Here's a little quiz of the day for all you pet people: What does a yellow ribbon tied to a dog's leash mean? I just found this out and it's very interesting....
Good for you pegmih--you win! :victorious: The prize is you get to buy me some yellow ribbons for my dogs....It is interesting, isn't it? I think it's a good idea to spread the word on this one.
