Will It Be A Kumbaya Moment?

Just heading out the door for the first member/board exchange meeting. It is at the Sundial auditorium and starts at 9 am. Should be interesting. We know little in the way of details other than the board president said she worked long and hard on putting it together.

We'll see. Several of us following how we got to this point, with the strong arming of board members to vote for it, found it left a bad taste in our mouths. That said, i've always been a glass half full kind of guy, so rather than being a pessimist, i will attend with an open mind.

I've no prepared questions, as i want to see the format and if the responses are board answered or if we go back to the old days/old ways of every tough question being shuffled off to management. Hopefully today will be the first step in restoring a voice to the community; a true Kumbaya moment for all of us.

Well I didn't hear any Kumbaya tune emanating from Sundial, but then again I'm just finishing breakfast since I don't do mornings unless there is some emergency mtg that absolutely needs to be attended. Anyway, awaiting your impressions....

Hey scj, thought i saw you slip in all be it later. The video is apparently up and i want to watch it again before commenting. As i told Skipper53 on another thread, more Karma than Kumbaya.

Just watched the video from the Member/Board Exchange. I want to thank all of those that showed up in person to ask questions, make comments and be a representative for those of us that can't attend. COVID is still circulating and these type of indoor meetings just make me too nervous to attend. It was good to see some in masks and ample seating for the number attending to leave some spaces between seats. That said, I'll move on to content.

There were so many points raised and some were new while others are continuing issues. This type of format is indeed a step in the right direction and for the most part non-confrontational. Members need information and when there seems to be no response it is frustrating. When there are answers which seem outlandish it amps up the frustration. I have sent emails to individual Board Members and have been lucky to get one response out of the whole group. Board Members should be at least required to acknowledge receipt of emails.

Now, what is the next step? As was asked, will the Board hold a work session or planning meeting to respond to some of the questions? Some of the issues can be directed to the standing committees for research and answers i.e. Golf, IT, Long Range Planning, Bylaws.... If the COC(Committee on Clubs) still met monthly, they could answer questions regarding clubs. Golf Committee could address many of the issues brought up by Members. If there was still a Communications Committee they could address the flow of information from Management and the Board to the Members. It would almost seem necessary to either have two Member Exchanges monthly so some answers could be given without waiting a month, make any Board work session or planning session open to Members(without Members speaking) or have an item added to the monthly Board Meeting to cover the issues brought up at the Member/Board Exchange. The Committee Chair/Co-Chair could give an update.

I was very interested in the response about what Royal Oaks will contribute to the RCSC for their new 150+ expansion. I know this is something I tend to re-hash, but did Bill really say "Yes, Royal Oaks will be paying a set amount to the RCSC for each unit." ??? He may have referred to El Dorado as an example but those units are condos owned by residents which is totally different. Clarification please.

So, kudos to the effort and when it seems safe I look forward to attending in the future. Or, perhaps there would be a way to email a question in advance, giving our member number and have it read at the meeting?

The video was posted yesterday but no email blast sent until this morning. Perhaps it's because our Communications/Marketing Coordinator received no response back from the powers that be regarding making the suggested and overwhelming crowd-supported change to rename the exchange Member Board instead of Board Member. After all, we were told it belongs to us. She needed to get the email blast sent so that's why it still says Board Member Exchange.

I thought the meeting went well for the most part; it wasn't just the Sun City Advocates talking as was feared. Good questions about golf, communication to members, transparency about projects, noise around Viewpoint Lake area with proposed pickleball courts moves. The Best Dog Friends asked once again (have been asking since 2019) for an indoor training area for their dogs. Discovered that they chipped in their own club money ($5K) to put up some shade at Fairway a few years back. This is absurd! This is what that "Rainy-Day" Carry Forward money that the present GM squirrels away should be used for.

I'm anxious to see how they go about responding to our requests/comments. I thought Boards could not gather (more than the quorum) outside of Board meetings to have discussions so I inquired where they were going to work on the issues. I was told that was a Title 33 "thing" and we were Title 10. I might do a little more digging about that. Besides, I want all 9 Board members in the discussion; not just the majority.

So - what did you think?

I don't believe Title 10 has anything to do with it either. I believe that the definition of a meeting is in their parliamentary authority, which states if you have a quorum present and you make decisions, that's a deliberative assembly and is considered a meeting. But of course the board makes-up their own definitions!
