I have been watchng Saturn slowly catching up with Jupiter for the last few months without realizing that it would merge into an historic "Christmas Star" event. They will be closest together on Dec. 21, I urge you to go out and locate them before that so that you can get a sense of how they move. That is right after sunset, in the low southwest. Here is a NASA diagram. Enjoy, and they go very well with eggnog and . . ....... whatever.

Thanks for the heads up Carptrash. I went out and did my pre-spotting last night and hope to see the merge tonight.

We got a good look the night of the 21st. Our binoculars aren't very powerful but we could clearly see the two planets.

Jupiter (and a hard to see in this pic Saturn) are in the upper left.

Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday, I saw the 2 planets.
Last night, Christmas Eve, the clouds parted just in time for me to see the CHRISTMAS STAR.

Venus is out as an evening "star" again, so enjoy her.

For those of you still up at sunset, Venus is now an evening star and can be fairly easily spotted in the sunset (the west) around 8 p.m., and earlier than that if you really look.
