Well Tom, nothing would please me more than being able to go back to work -- being holed up for 3-weeks doesn't help the checkbook much. But at my age the risk of infection outweighs my sense of macho and freedom.

    Some facts to consider...

Regarding Freedom & Sheep -- it's noteworthy that the countries with strong (nearly dictatorial) leadership (eg, China, S. Korea) that took immediate decisive action AND their citizens did what they were told (sheep?) got CV19 under control much faster than those that initially gave their citizens the Freedom to do what they wanted (Spain, Italy, US).

Testing -- countries that checked high numbers of citizens temperatures (eg, S.Korea) while they got test kits in place were able to quarantine those likely infected very early in the spread. Meanwhile, our White House seemed to be in denial there was even a looming catastrophe, ignoring the medical community's alarms, announcing to the public via Fox News and press briefings that there essentially was no problem, a miracle would end it in a week or two, that it was a hoax or conspiracy. No sense of urgency to alert medical facilities or citizens to prepare to hospital overload and worker layoffs. No urgency to test/quarantine. No sense of urgency to get test kits -- in fact Trump refused kits from German company because he couldn't get exclusivity.

hydroxy chloroquine with Z-Max -- last I heard it wasn't certain it actually works for CV19 -- France said yes, China said no, many groups around the world have started trials, including one in NY. If it works, great! But Hydroxy chloroquine has some nasty side effects, so while you don't die it's unclear how soon you can return to work.

Vaccine -- while there may eventually be a vaccine it's likely 12-18 months away. Meanwhile, China has reported people who had recovered from CV19 are getting re-infected so it's unclear when the majority of our workers can return to work safely.

    Dear IC,

Macho has nothing to do with it. It is the human condition to yearn for Freedom and Rugged Individualism. Enlightened Self Interest helps the individual and the common good. Edison, Ford, Salk, Booker T. Washington, Einstein, Graham, Teddy Roosevelt, etc. come to mind. If one stays stagnant, one becomes a tree stump.

Communist China yanked people out of their homes and either killed them or put them out in a place to die. Should we do that here in the USA? South Korea has a peninsula nation under a very tight government control. I know because I spent 3 years there and I know what they are like and even if they have some freedom they are still controlled by the state. As far as Spain and Italy go, they made deals with the Communist Chinese for economics and allowed thousands of Communist Chinese in and now are paying the price, because the virus came with the visitors. Trump stopped the influx from Communist China after receiving an intel brief on January 21, and then locked the border on them on January 31 to the accusations of the Democrats and Liberal Media of Xenophobic Racism. Now the same accusers accuse him of not doing it early enough. And shortly after that he stopped visitors from the EU for the same reason, namely to stop the influx of the virus from the EU. And he did this at the height of the failed democrat attempt to impeach and remove him from office.

Trump was and is in denial of the danger? Don't insult my intelligence. He locked the border from where it was coming from, Communist China, EU, UK, etc as soon as the danger become known. Don't believe me, ask Drs. Birx and Fauci. So, me thinks you are in denial of the facts. He refused the WHO test kits as their failure rate was abysmal and went with our own and then asked our own pharmaceutical companies to develop better and more plentiful tests. Now we have tested over 1.2 million Americans with more to come with the final objective to test all of us with the new, less than 2 week old, Abbott Pharmaceutical test that is done with a simple swab and takes only 5 to 15 minutes to get results, instead of the old CDC test from the Obama Administration that takes 5 days to 2 weeks to give results. We are testing over 100,000 a day now with more to come. In 8 days, we tested more than the South Koreans did in 8 weeks. And the German company Novartis, is sending millions of Hydroxy-Chloroquine Sulfate pills for our medical personnel and patients with Z-Max.

What side effects? Who are you reading, because my sources, NIH, CDC, FDA, USPHS, says it has been out there since WWII to replace natural Quinine for Malaria with none or few side effects. Now Governor Cuomo and others are clamoring for it for their medical personnel and patients to save as many as possible. Are they wrong? So far, the patients that used it are back to normal or as near as possible in 1 to 5 days. Many are saying that it saved their lives. Thank God for Trump's new law "The right to try" which made this possible. Drs. and Nurses in New York are taking it as a Prophylaxis to stay on the job. And the German company Novartis, is sending millions of Hydroxy-Chloroquine Sulfate pills for our medical personnel and patients with Z-Max at no cost. And the domestic Hydroxy-Chloroquine Sulfate pills cost $20.00 per dose here in the good ole USA.

The vaccine is 6 months ahead of schedule already. We got to clinical trials in one week instead of 6 months. Trump streamlining the FDA process did that. I predict it will be here by winter in October 2020. Earlier would be better, but this process has also been streamlined by the Trump Administration. Same for using Hydroxy-Chloroquine Sulfate pills. FDA approved it for different use in one week. That is Warp Speed. Trump Administration again.

I will tell when we will go back to work. 1. When we protect our medical personnel from infection. 2. When we have a good therapeutics such Hydroxy-Chloroquine Sulfate pills with Z-Max that alleviate the effects of the Wuhan Chinese Covid-19 virus. 3. When we test all of America to find out who has had it and who has it now and who has yet to get it. Then the ones that have immunity will go back to work just as we did with smallpox and polio. We can also sequester those that have not had it as well as the sick. This is what a vibrant, optimistic, freedom loving nation does. And we have done this before. Americans do not give up.

And finally, don't believe anything you hear from the Communist Chinese. They deliberately lied about its origin and it breaking out in Wuhan and denied that knowledge of its existence and transmissibility from the world for over a month and got the WHO to lie with them. Now that they have been exposed, they have quietly admit their duplicity, but the WHO and our mainstream media continue to cover for them. Communists lie.

Not sure if by bolding your response it was more likely to be believed, but whatever. I appreciate you both sound and are patriotic; and i know you are a believer in all things trump. Unfortunately not everyone falls under his spell, mystique.

Rather than bold this lengthy article from The Atlantic (oh no, not that liberal rag) entitled "All of Trump's Lies About the Coronavirus," here is the opening paragraph:

In the 11 days since he declared the coronavirus pandemic a national emergency, President Donald Trump has repeatedly lied about this once-in-a-generation crisis.
Here, a collection of the biggest lies he’s told as the nation barrels toward a public-health and economic calamity. This post will be updated as needed.

You can read this lengthy article here.

One of the most important aspects of our great nation is Freedom of the Press. Without it we become an autocratic country where bullies just power their way through saying whatever they want and the sheep (you keep referring to), buy what they are spewing. By the way, in spite of the amazing job the president is doing, the USA led the world in deaths yesterday with 912, today in all likelihood be higher.

God bless our country and RIP to all those lost to COVID 19.

For a moment I thought it was all caps, but no, I was mistaken.

  5. The last few posts I found interesting on a few points.

First, the name of the virus is Covid 19, not the Wuhan Chinese Covid 19 virus. If you want to name the virus, name in honor of our moron President like I have. I call it the Covfefe 19 Trump Pandemic virus, which is more accurate. Sorry Tom but you are falling into the president’s talking points of blaming the Chinese and saying they are responsible for our problems. They are not.

Second, the president’s leadership skills, he has none. A believe an accurate statement of his skills would be that he couldn’t lead a pack of starving dogs to fresh meat. He is at best incompetent. With the exception of yesterday, his talking points were his TV ratings and how great he has performed. Couple that with VP Stiffy, his laminated cards and his constant brown nosing, we are lucky we got this far. Governors who do not kiss the ring or some body part of the prez, you do not receive needed medical supplies. I find this appalling.

Third, we need a national lockdown. Quarantines work, Florence, Italy in 1348 was the first to institute this and while they suffered a 30% death rate, it was better than 50 to 60% rate for other parts of Europe. It seems populous Red States such as Texas and Florida are not getting with the program and they will pay a terrible price in human life.

Lastly, economy versus human life, why is this even an argument? Are you willing to sacrifice any of your family so you can have a death defying meal at Taco Bell? Maybe kill off a few members so the DJIA goes up 50 points and then drops 600 points the next day. As for vaccines, in spite of what the prez says, it will take a year and a half for a vaccine to be developed that might work. Don’t buy into to his snake oil cures that are being pushed by the internet or Fox News. The only person you should be listening to is Dr. Fauci.

Sorry I got on a rant here, but as a student of history I knew early that this had the Black Death written all over it. Not the rat and flea thing but how quickly it could spread, geometrically and then exponentially with mortality tracking close to that. Those who do not learn the lessons of history are destined to repeat it.

Stay safe and secure, we will get through this.

Here are a few articles that will demonstrate that the Trump administration knew in advance of the Covid19 virus outbreak that the US would not be prepared for a Pandemic such as this.

Trump was warned of the country's lack of preparedness when he took office.

Also the Trump administrations own HHS ran an exercise in 2019 that showed the exact same lack of preparedness as the Obama administrations warnings.

The 2019 exercise was called Crimson Contagion.

Here is a link to Wikipedia on Crimson Contagion.

Here is another interesting article from NPR

I tried to upload the full text of the Crimson Contagion exercise, but it was too large. Here is a link of the full text.

As far as Hydroxychloroquine is concerned, there is absolutely no evidence that this drug will prevent covid19 or cure people with the same. Any mention of prevention or cures is purely anecdotal.
Yes, The FDA did say the drug is safe for the uses intended and they would allow it for use in certain cases but participants must sign a waiver. Also, there have been no trials of this drug for treating covid19 that I'm aware of. There is mention of this drug being used in India but again, no solid data as to it's effectiveness. Also, there is no data with regards to long term effects of using this drug on Covid19 patients and others.

Whether you respect/disrespect South Korea politically, they were prepared and so far appear to be managing the CV19 epidemic better than anyone else. Here's a NYT article as to how they are doing it -- too bad our "worlds greatest negotiator" leader didn't do something similar (and still isn't). And while we watched them doing it on the news -- well -- I guess DJT was still glued to Fox News and their denial nonsense. What's especially noteworthy is S. Korea's approach didn't tank their economy, which was Trumps biggest concern early on. So today, here we sit, infections still spreading, deaths growing, huge layoffs beginning. Whether I insulted TM's intelligence, or not, Trumps early denial, his subsequent refusal to be responsible, and ongoing attempt to blame everyone but himself -- THAT's insulting.

If you like visuals, compare the shapes of the curves -- the US is red, S. Korea orange. The US trend continues to raise and shows no sign of starting to level off as we approach our day 30 while S. Korea's graph starts flattening about their day 6. So apparently all the things Tom listed as Trump doing effectively, well -- um --- they just weren't.

I can remember reading years ago about how Marxists always had to fit everything that happened or might happen into the Marxist doctrine and it got to be really convoluted as to how that could be done. We now get to observe something similar with the Trump canon. When the definition of that is "What ever Trump does is the right thing" then squeezing out an explanation or putting the toothpaste back into the tube, or whatever, gets to be quite a trick. Of course living in the Post-Truth era helps that cause considerably.

Hopefully they will name the museum after you because that's something you deserve you got all the work done yourself my typing and writing is not good when I'm on the move

  19. Not arguing, just saw the quote in a book I am reading and found it timely. If the library has it, read City of Scoundrels by Gary Krist. It’s about two weeks in Chicago during the summer of 1919 when William Hale “Big Bill” Thompson was mayor. I found the mayor’s antics strangely similar to the prez’. Check it out, no pun intended.

In his all-bold post Tom said, regarding a vaccine, "I predict it will be here by winter in October 2020". I can't say it won't, but it doesn't look probable to me unless something remarkable happens. I read an article published earlier today which interviewed Dr. Evan Anderson who is the lead researcher in the first vaccine trial in the US. Here are some excerpts...
