I was going to write this little blurb on the "Covid 19" thread, but was concerned if it was stepping out in the wrong direction.

Yes, we are the target age group, yes, we should be sheltering in place, and yes, there are some who believe this is just a hoax. But what about those who have to be on the front lines?

Can your grocery store worker shelter in place for two weeks? Can the truckers, who are doing as much as possible to deliver goods to shelves, allowed to even use a rest stop? Not when states have closed them all down. What about the doctors and nurses working double shifts to care for the sickest of these individuals, plus the other medical emergencies occurring.

And what about the workers who are dealing with the unemployed or laid off? Those folks taking the information from people in order to get them food, healthcare, and unemployment benefits? They are not sheltered in place, they are still helping those in need. Trust me there are many in this time of shut downs and furloughs who need the help of local social services and those taking the applications.

So, if you see someone out and about in their vehicle going from point A to B, don't assume these people aren't heeding the warnings. Perhaps they are the ones doing the jobs needed to keep us all safe during this crisis.

  2. Sorry for the late response CM, but you are correct about the workers in the essential services just doing their jobs. The health care risking life and lungs to take care of the be they victims of Covfefe 19, grocery store workers, UPS or Fed Ex drivers, service workers, garbage workers, the line cook and hostess at Biscuits for preparing those terribly addictive blueberry pancakes for Diane and myself or the many I haven’t mentioned. Thank you for risking your lives to keep our lives at status quo.

I have witnessed many entertaining things on TV that didn’t involve Roku. The granddaughter on one side of the street and grandpa on the other dancing to the Jackson 5, the goats taking over a small village in the UK, the siblings entertaining the senior woman with a cello concert on her front porch and people just singing out their windows. All great, but the best story I saw was on the news last night were the doctors and nurses applauding the hospital cleaning crew in NYC. It showed that they were as vital, maybe more, than the professionals. Class that President Covfefe 19 virus and VP Stiffy will never understand nor have.

Stay safe and healthy, we will get through this in spite of the incompetent Republicans.

And I am keeping in mind that this is likely a dress rehearsal for the Big One, probably not that far down the line.

Will the Big One be when victims become zombies?

I, too, have to thank all those that are required or volunteer to work in these dangerous conditions. I thank each and every one heartily when we have to use a personalized service. So scary for them and their families.

Are all (any?) of you familiar with The Decameron?
It's a collection of stories from the 14th Century told by a group of people in a castle (or something) outside of Florence, where they have withdrawn to escape the Black Death. The point of the stories is to pass time and to amuse each other, and since at least I seem to find myself in a some what 21st Century version of that I am wondering if we should do something similar. Each of us contribute one story, true, or fiction, or some combination of the two, plagiarized or original, and see what we come up with?

  7. Well CT, I am and you sort of beat me to the post as I just finished listening to a podcast on this very topic. Alas it is not in my library of medieval literature, but I was taking notes to assist in enlightening the crowd here. Have not read in 52 years.

I would also recommend the writings of Samuel Pepys as he wrote of the plague that swept through London in 1665-1666. The Great Fire finally put an end to that round of the plague.

I was not sure that you went beyond the 12th and 13th Centuries, this being more of a Renaissance thing than medieval, but the text of the Decameron can easily be found on line for those that wish to read it. But I am more interested in us creating our own updated version here. I had a story almost ready to ge when I decided to NOT do anything political.

    Meanwhile, elsewhere:
“The Governor’s Executive Order suspends the enforcement of any local ordinance or order adopted or issued since March 1, 2020, that relates to COVID-19,” said Josh Hildebrandt, director of public and governmental affairs for DNR. “This Executive Order thus lifted any local ordinances or orders that had closed or restricted access to Georgia beaches.”

  10. CT, my university history training was all over the place and I worked in some philosophy courses also to give a good background.
The podcast I am listening to is called Medieval Death Trip. There are currently about 81 different lectures but not strictly on death. The title is a takeoff on a book from 1999 called Wisconsin Death Trip. Go to the site for a more in depth background and a list of all the podcasts. Interesting.
Not to be political or anything, the live WH daily press conferences/briefings are on Channel 61 at 3PM. Due to the time difference I do call these the 6 O’Clock Follies, a play on the briefings by the Army in Saigon during the Vietnam Nam war.
    Stay safe people.

I beg to differ. My copy (in hand) of "Wisconsin Death Trip", I believe a first edition, is from 1973. And it is amazing. And is sort of the reason I do not watch the WH briefings. Meanwhile as the beloved John Prine is being mourned the local paper is still printing letters from our neighbors calling the virus a media hoax. Sometime GdV we'll have to chat about some of this stuff. I am very into cemetery art and . . ......... blah blah blah.

Do you ever find yourself wondering, so what is the virus doing in the rest of the world? Well, okay, but I do. I felt that in order to answer my questions I needed to go to web sites outside of the USA. Which I did and found stories such as , "Dozens of members of the ruling Saudi royal family, as many as 150, have been infected with coronavirus in recent weeks, a news report said." And lots more. If you have a little time on your hands and am curious about the world outside of Sun City, check it out. It is still a big world out there.

The Social Distances played another in their Saturday Driveway Series in Glendale, which is not Sun City but close enough so that Sun City folks were there. I have not watched the whole thing, song two is going on, but if you are interested, it is here.
