A second dog park?

In another thread there were some comments made regarding a second dog park. I guess i was confused because i thought 3Gscaz was suggesting the empty shopping center on 99th and Union Hills across from the Marinette Rec Center.

In the latest post, that appears to not be the site they were talking about. Because there was some interest and a new thread was suggested, i've started this one. Just curious 3Gscaz, are you talking about buying the club house and grounds at the Union Hills Country club?

    I'm lost otherwise.

Yikes No! The country club is not something I would want us to tackle at this time.

Where are we talking about then?

They were talking about the now vacated mini retail complex on the southeast corner of 99th & Union Hills. Not a viable location in my view.

The previous long range planning committee had mapped out a perfect space for a dog park in the water retention area when Marinette was revamped. Looks like there still would be space for a "small dogs" park within the confines of the walking track.

The 2nd dog park which was approved at the Sun Bowl was never moved further along than the promise it would be built. The purchase of the Duffy Dog Park was never brought forward to the membership or discussed at any Member Exchange until after it was purchased. It spelled trouble from the get-go until the Duffyland Club was formed and some leadership took steps to improve it. Actually planning out a dog park and getting it right would go a long ways to avoiding problems.

Aggie, What issues do you see with the corner of 99th and Union Hills? Someone else mentioned that the 1.2 acres was too small. Some of my concerns would be the location in the far north of the community, parking and busy street. What I do like is there are no residential neighbors to this property and the utilities are in place. I don't know of any other property in Sun City which is larger and more centrally located, do you?

My concerns with the 99th & Union Hills location is the location itself. To me that is a very bad location. As suggested, parking would be an issue and the very busy intersection are definite drawbacks. Also, as 3genscaz suggests, more than likely there would be a lot of push-back from the community as many would complain that it is too far to drive to. People living in phase 1 would complain they would have to travel all the to the outskirts of phase 3 and even some phase 2 individuals would complain that they would have to travel too far. Any one who uses a golf cart to take their pet to the dog park would also have issues as golf carts cannot be on 99th ave. Also, having to demolish the existing structures would be a huge expense and then a block wall would have to surround the property. Whenever and wherever a second dog park (and then a third) is established, there will be problems and concerns. You can't please all the people all the time.

That corner is one of the worst in Sun City for access. Like SCR said it is way too busy with folks having dogs and the potential to get loose. The parking lot at Duffeeland during the winter months is jammed so about half the space on 99th would be for parking. I hate the argument about "too far" but it is the reality of living in a community where access to almost anything is next door. Getting a second dog park will be challenging. Duffeeland came available and was bought for a fraction of the actual value.

The most logical space is at the Sun Bowl. Don't hold your breath, it's on no one's radar screen. It's the classic example of why we need do a better job of finding out what the community wants. Funny, but there are things beyond golf that need be addressed. Go figure.

At the gym this morning and Safeway this afternoon I asked for input on a second dog park. Everyone had an opinion, lot's of them. Several people have dogs but don't use the dog park and never intend to for various reasons. Not one person belonged to the dog club and only two people said they think a second dog park might be a good idea as long as their own personal club arrangements were not impacted for financial reasons related to the dog park. I'll be changing gyms on Thursday and shopping at the Fry's on 91st Ave going forward but I will say the folks were very nice and have no problem speaking to the issue. Good Luck dog park supporters!

On to my next great idea......
