I bounded out of bed this morning, excited to read the latest news and views on the net and found this gem: "The happiest country in the world is Finland." Wow, and they were followed closely by Denmark, Norway, Iceland and The Netherlands.

Holy crap, how can that be? I had to really search to find the USA, who had dropped down to an ugly #19.

It seems both impossible and implausible for the self-proclaimed "greatest country in the world" to be down that low. The good news is we were way above many of those countries our current president considers "shithole" nations.

So, who wants to venture a guess, why aren't we the happiest country? We've got it all right? I don't get it, do you?

  2. I’ll bite on this one Bill. Just to piss off all the trumpers, conservatives and reactionaries, they are all essentially socialist countries. Admittedly they pay high taxes in relation to the U. S., their roads are not pothole ridden or all together a disgrace likes ours, everyone has health coverage, the schools teach real life skills without parental interference about little Johnny not wanting to take the evolution portion of a science class because it goes against his religious beliefs. They start sex education in kindergarten and the parents fully support it. The food they purchase is for the most part organic and does not look like it is older than you. They are outdoors a lot walking, participating in sports, bicycling, etc.

I recently returned for an extended time in The Netherlands and was amazed by the roads, health coverage, school system, in fourth grade they learn English, sixth grade German, eighth grade French and a choice in high school of learning another. By the time they graduate high school the students are fluent in four languages. What do are graduates know? I recently read that over 60% of our high school graduates cannot tell when the Civil War was fought or say who won. If this does not upset you, nothing will. I stayed in Haarlem for a few days, toured the Carrie Ten Boom residence and met two Bolivian boys during the tour who knew more about WWII, they our average high school student. By the way, the boys were 10 and 13.

I’ Get of my soapbox now, but that is my answer and I am sticking to it.
