Dang...my computer must have had a few too many holiday toddies. It clearly read that renters with privilege cards are able to vote.
Too funny aggie, happens to the best of us. And to my friend ic, i couldn’t agree more.Sharing information across the community would only make us stronger. Unfortunately, we have gone the exact opposite direction as has Sun City West. When people have the ability to see/know facts and info, they tend to be more invested. If you really want a chuckle, ask a board member if they can answer these most basi questions regarding stats/data. How many eligible voters are there? What is the percentage of individual home owners compared to couples? This info Is available with the push of a button. Can you say, deer in the headlights look? And rather than hold you in suspense, there were three ex-board members asked if they wanted Dave’s spot. Gene, Ron and Linda are quality people, but don’t let them confuse you with the idea they applied. Had three new inexperienced board members been elected, there was at least an argument to be made. This spot should go to the number 4 vote receiver.
Actually you said “Renters (i recently read there were approximately 1800 of them) are able to vote, even if they have a privilege card.” You meant aren’t but you said are, unless there’s some new type of backwards English.
How to I start a post? The winter solstice is today Friday, December 21, 2018: 8 things to know about the shortest day of the year. https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2018/12/18/18144477/winter-solstice-2018
To start a new "Thread" so people can read your post or reply to your post.....go to the forum header you would like to post under i.e. Sun City General, non-Sun City etc. At the top right of the page there's a blue button that's labeled "Post New Thread". Democracy in action. We do not need to look too far to see that it is not a perfect system, just the best.
The fix was in long before the ballots were cast. Those of us familiar with the behind the scenes actions know it is amazing Diana made it to the the final three. I want to see the open seat go to the candidate who achieved fourth place. It would make for a fair and even board, much less beholding to the powers that be. I also dearly want to see "open meetings" as ruled on by the Judge back in August. I am a true believer it is the only way to have government of the people for the people. Right now, the behind the door closed meetings allow for all kinds of back room deals to occur, with the electorate never even knowing what is being decided about the fate of the corporation, which directly affects the cardholders. There are specific rules in Title 10 about how meetings can occur, outside meetings of the directors beyond the scope of the board, and a distinct need to keep the members informed of what the board is deciding on. It would be a breath of fresh air to know how decisions were made about certain items, how much money is being allocated to these special projects and make sure the board members themselves are accountable for their actions. This really is not asking much of the board to be held accountable for their actions and the ensuing decisions. I really like the accountable part.
Open Meeting Law: In the Trumpian world we now live the rule of law appears no more than a sieve. And so it seems the RCSC board thinks some statutes can just to be ignored. But by challenging we member's resort aren't they risking being taken back into court?
Guilty as charged Cynthia...really need to proof before i post. Interesting to note IC, during the 70's and 80's lawsuits were a weekly occurrence. Unfortunately Carole, seems to me the judge's ruling on Title 33 was not a final decision, but a preliminary ruling. I would for one love to see the RCSC have to follow Title 33 and quit hiding behind closed doors. It would be the one thing that would change the dynamic that allows them to do business the way they do.
I’ll preface my remarks by saying that I enjoy your posts and the following is not intended to question you, but rather better understand the election process. What do you mean by “the fix was in”?
In my personal experience, I have seen behind the scenes actions, that in my opinion, have had an overall effect on the outcomes of the elections. It is no mystery as to the amount of monies poured into the golf courses, excessive amounts, which were approved by the board. The outside forces which led to the elections of these boards has, in my opinion, come at a great cost to the community in the millions of dollars spent to repair golf courses that were not in need of repair. In my statement, "the fix was in", I was referring to these same forces which can sway outcomes of the elections. I never intended to imply there as a rigging of the ballot box, rather certain clubs and other interests can cause an unbalanced vote. With the slate of fine, educated and qualified candidates vying for these positions, in my humble opinion, I did not feel a need to place former board members back into office. I really did support one of the candidates because of his budget and finance experience, but there was other budget and finance experience which was equal to the candidate I had suggested in an earlier post. There was far too much talent, offering to bring new and vital energy to the board. I hope the board decides to place the fourth qualified candidate into the vacating position, but I feel there is already an agenda afoot, which will not allow this placement to happen. That is sad for the community.
As i read these threads, i often think back about the internal struggles to build Sun City. It was never easy, it was always about engaging people and searching for the greater good of the community. It is tragic that history has been lost on so many. Because once you come to understand the challenges this community faced, you begin to appreciate how much so many gave so we could have what we have today. In the end, we have a simply great community that afr too many people take for granted. Think not? Ask yourself why so few, invest in their future by participating in this remarkable process of self-governance? And to Carole's point, there's nothing sinister about how we are run. But by ignoring elections, we have allowed the minority to dictate to the majority. How dumb is that?
One more reason, in my opinion, to become Arizona Revised Statute Title 33 compliant. Not only does the statute require open meetings, with the exception of special circumstances, but also has ballots mailed out to the members for elections. Think of it, you receive a ballot in the mail at your home about voting for the RCSC Board of Directors members. Perhaps, prior to receiving a mailed ballot, you never gave a thought to voting for a board member, and didn't feel you had any input anyway. All of a sudden, literature and a ballot arrives at your doorstep, could this entice you to take an interest in the process? I truly believe if ballots were mailed out and folks were given the opportunity to know what it is they are voting for, they would become interested and more engaged. The RCSC has long balked at this portion of the process because of the cost of printing, mailing and providing postage for the return ballot. I feel the cost is negligible compared to the possible outcomes of a balanced election with qualified board representatives placed by the community as a whole. I also suspect the ballot return rate would be significantly higher then the meager numbers we have up until now. I know there was an initial ruling made by the judge in the case, stating the RCSC falls under the planned communities realm, but I truly do hope the Judge finds the RCSC needs to be Title 33 compliant, and very, very soon.
