Did I read the SCW Independent from 10/19 correctly?

I hadn't read that E, but nothing surprises me these days. There's no question, functioning without committee's or input from residents is quicker and easier...the question becomes: Is it the right way to function? Clearly i see it as a bad move, but if no one cares, i guess just doing things the easy way will be the wave of the future.

    Tragic.

I don't see it as a "no one cares" situation... its more a lack of focus in my mind.

I saw the following in a article on an HOA topical website...
Self interest is the key motivator. Thus, governance, whether political or corporate, is naturally susceptible to the Iron Law. Obviously, the management side of the RCSC has their job and "empire" as their self interest. What is the self interest of the Board members? And the membership?

The membership will become involved when their "self interest" motivates them to do so. Self interests may be positives or negatives. The oligarchs have money and presumed authority to help them satisfy/diffuse negative member self interest. We activists have neither at the moment... and that's why we can't get traction.

The activists as you point out have neither money nor authority and therefore cannot
    gain traction.

Traction will only be attained when the members' self interests motivate them to get
    involved.

When will the members self interests motivate them? Only when their pocketbooks are
severely affected. Until then, it will be status quo.

Witness the APS rate case and mandatory demand charges and the Epcor waste water
consolidation. Hundreds if not thousands of letters, emails, and phone calls from
Sun City residents have been received by the ACC opposing both. When the pocketbook
    is threatened, residents react.

There was a concerted effort and push to get to that. The classes offered etc. I know it was pocketbook motivated but without a group of motivated people to start the ball rolling, many would have not written those letters or called, despite the increased costs. A few people usually need to take the initiative and time to convince and motivate the group.

Guess I'd better look up the word oligarchy.

BTW I voted for the lesser of 2 evils.
    Wonder which one it was?

Simply a brilliant assessment of how organizational structure works IC. Things are good enough that people at the base level have no sense of urgency while those in power have at their core the self-preservation of the structure as it exists.

Yesterday the comment was made several times about decisions being made for the greater good; again, those are the kinds of answers that everyone wants to hear, all too often once being elected, the greater good gets set aside for the good of the organization.

Can you link it? I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Copied from the article: Board member Dean Cross believes the board’s goals discussion should also consider whether to disband most of its committees.

“We could probably get a lot more done,” he said. “We can do what we want if we do it correctly.

Wow; it's one thing to abandon the Del Webb name, another completely to abandon the Articles of Incorporation.

You are welcome. My Take: Committees add value. The expertise of the membership is wealth to RCSC at no charge. How great is that!

Clearly that is not the position of your colleagues on the board nor the management team Ida. If it were, both the legal committee and the long range planning committee would still be in place.

As noted in the article linked, too many board members would love to function without oversight or a proper checks and balance system. The concentration of power is always enticing to those who have it and refuse to share it.

Clearly I am one who believes in member involvement for the good of all. It is healthy for the community at large. The Long Range Planning Committee is something I highly favor. We have a lot of talented members that want to contribute. I say this because of all the members that volunteered for the recent ad hoc Committee (GRAND AVE.) and this just reinforces the commitment I have to a permanent standing LR committee. I have one more year left on the Board and hope it is reinstated before I exist. I was not here when the Legal Committee was in place but any committee that is good and beneficial for the members and makes sense is always a consideration for me.
