I thought Underground Trash was rather a cool idea when I first heard about it but after using it I'm not sure I like it as much standard system of rolling carts. I think if I were older the bending and lifting could be more difficult that rolling. I read the the idea was so unsightly carts were not left around but from what I've seen people pile additional bags outside of the underground can so what's the difference. I've heard we're allowed to leave up to 4 bags outside of the can, though I don't see that info printed any place. Do most people like the underground system?
I like the underground system because there are fewer containers left on sidewalks or yards. We always have bagged trash underground for pick up but some weeks we may have a larger stash due to some yard cleanup. The recycle pick up takes care of cardboard and plastic which is most of the bulk. I see nothing wrong with people leaving a bag of trash out on pick up day morning. Trash bags should not be left curbside the night before because of animals that may scatter the trash.
Personally, I seldom put trash in the can. I bring it out late the night before pickup and leave the bag adjacent to the can. Saves everyone's back all around. About once a month I throw it in the can just to be sure it gets emptied of the anything thrown in by others. Another tip for those new to the community: Heavy rains sometimes end up flooding the cans and causing them to float a bit; almost akin to raising heavenward. If yours is popping, simply pull it out, pour it out and let it dry. If you leave it to drain by itself it is a slow process.
If you move forward with getting a rolling can and putting it out, let us know how it works. I'm sure I can get used to the garbage in the ground thing, but it's good to know if there are options.
I just checked the flyer that Parks sends out and they will empty above ground trash containers up to a 35 gallon size. They want to keep the weight of cans, boxes or bags under 50 pounds. There are a few special rules in that anything with thorns(roses, cactus, bougainvillea etc.)must be in boxes that can be thrown away in the truck, branch trimmings must be bundled, fruit needs special attention to keep under the 50 pound limit and when recycling you must break down cardboard boxes.
When I asked I was told to put them with trash. Bagged, tied bundles, small (32 gallon) cans. Not loose or oversized. By the way, I like the underground trash recepticles also. I also like twice a week pickup and the easy recycling. It would be nice if yard waste were composted but I like the way it's done otherwise.
