Yesterday was a superlative day in SC. The weather was drop dead gorgeous, the sun never stopped smiling on us and there was so much to do it was crazy good. The golf courses were packed, the pools were filled and while I missed both those activities, the fall pairs lawn bowling league at Fairway began. For those that don't know, lawn bowling is played on a typically a grass surface 120 x 120. It's cut much like a putting green with it being perfectly flat. For anyone who has ever putted on the side of an incline, it's all read and speed. Lawn bowls weigh just under 4 lbs and have a built in bias. They'll turn as much as 10 feet, with the faster the green, the more they move. We have 5 bowls clubs with 7 greens in Sun City, all of them natural grass except Fairway. That one is artificial and it is the fastest of the greens. Some find it challenging because technique is everything. Half the 400 club members are Canadians, as the sport has a heavy British influence. But alas, I stray. The point is most people that come here have never bowled, never even having seen it before. It is a microcosm of Sun City, an opportunity in retirement to try something wholly different. There's more options here than almost anywhere on earth. After bowling took care of some business with the rental, grabbed a quick bite and headed down to the show. As reported, the show was off the charts good, and the late night was spent walking the girls and catching up on the DVR'd events from the sports world. How the heck does life get any better than that? And more importantly, why weren't you here with us???????????
T - 100 days and counting. Yes, we have been manipulating the heck out of our plans and have shaved off 3 months. I met a young lady, who was there with her parents, on the Sun City bus tour who was an Olympic gold medal lawn bowler. Having no clue about lawn bowling, I asked her if she thought I could learn how to play. She very seriously said "YOU would need a lot of practice", then she graciously offered to teach me. I wish I would have gotten their names...I wonder if her parents decided to buy in Sun City. BP - have you run into any new lawn bowlers who might be gold medal winners? Full disclosure, the young lady is a Special Olympian, but in my mind an Olympic gold medalist is an Olympic gold medalist. Each one deserving the recognition of their hard work and determination.
