With all due respect Larry, I don't think it matters. What we are faced with is a learning opportunity. What skills are needed and what was lacking. How do you define the role and relationship in a way that maximizes the potential of success? How do we institutionalize transparency? What training are we lacking? It is a good time to reflect and some self-honesty.

I hope we learned that hiring a GM from within after spending a lot of money on employment agencies and head-hunters doesn't work.

Let the professionals find the right candidates and the Board needs to due their proper due diligence. Let's not make the same mistake 3 times in a row. (Although I didn't really have a problem with Mr. D'Luzansky) As the Boards one and only employee, I can't help to believe that they don't share some of the responsibility.

Seems to me hiring a GM has not been unlike renovation Mountain View! The RCSC goes out and hires professionals (3 at my last count) to come up with proper designs and evaluations then the Board steps in and does what they want! Still wondering how and why TriARC's selection of the Lawn Bowling Courts at Lake View for the theater location was such a good idea before it turned out to be a bad idea? And now it seems we're right back to Plan "M". Should we really trust the judgement of TriARC on renovating MV after such a bad decision on the theater location? Seems to me the Board was playing interference on the Lake View decision.

Might be nice to see a GM who has a personality and wears a suit and tie, or something more representative of a General Manager than a polo shirt and shorts! (Sorry, I went to a Catholic School and white shirt, tie and school blazer was the dress code of the day...every day!)

    Just my opinion!

This guy cost us a lot of money. First the $30,000 for the search fee only to find out he worked for us. Then the finders fee for hiring him which is generally 10% of the salary. Then there is the salary which I have pegged in the mid hundreds of thousands. Finally there are all the gerbils he hired for his patronage army to fill in for the competent people he fired.
    To be continued……….
P.S. Don’t hire that third rate search firm again, they were an embarrassment.

John I think it’s very important to know. Was it a bad hire by the board? Did they not do a good job of giving him direction on what they were trying to accomplish and sharing their vision with him? Or did he get fed up with the leadership and chose to go elsewhere. So is it the people or the process?

I think the GM may have been in a little over his head. Kinda reminds me of the Peter Principle!

I think our corporate documents clearly state our Mission, Vision & Values and a professional General Manager doesn't really need to be told what to do. We hire him/her for their knowledge and experience. We don't hire them to advance their personal status, we hire them to advance the success of our corporation.

With one-third of the Board changing every year you need a person with a stable laser focused agenda to lead the way and not be swayed by the ever changing Board and personal agendas.

    Just my opinion!

I feel the GM should not come in and try to change everything up. I think that was a big part of the disconnect. I think the GM should have a vision of continued enhancement of what we already created. Not a destroy and rebuild mentality. We need a focused partner working with the board and members.

I believe he was hired from within. Maybe we need an outsider with experience to come in and re-do/shake things up. Someone I know worked for him and was not a fan. No one was who worked for him.

That's how we lost Teresa, the lady who was in charge of getting the RCSC entertainment.

Is there even an HR dept. here? Where employees give reviews of upper mgmt, anonymously of course. Seems like there no accountability at all. The person I know whose spouse worked for D’Luzansky had nothing nice to say at all. I will not share what his team said but if there was a process maybe a lot of what happened could have been avoided.

Speaking of D’Luzansky where is our new and improved $300,000 upgraded website that was supposed to be done by end of summer, then by end of march?

Since I personally spoke with him, Matthew about the petitions, and other issues that Connie spoke of, he was given a mandate by the board to stream operations and that is what he did. They asked him to be an agent of change.Unfortunately the blame should be focused toward the board. Case in point, guest passes for visitors and purchasing them online which I do and it is helpful, but a small segment demanded punch cards. What online ordering did was take away cash handling, freed up monitors time and it was stream long operations. The defaming of one’s character both GM and board members is unacceptable.

Another streamline project is the moving of the check in desk at Fairway. The staff told me it had been excellent for being able to see who is coming in. At an exchange meeting a member went off about n 80,000 desk which was not
for just the specialty monitor desk, new lighting as there was none, wiring for computers and internet connection etc so another example if the misrepresentation of not obtaining facts and going off the financial sheet.

I hope the nit picking, accusations and untruths will stop. The exchange meeting has turned into a gripe session.

He took care of business and a small segment did everything to undermine everything. I certainly understand why both Matthew and Connie had enough. Thus is a very sad state of Sun City. There used to be so much hearsay and not going after the facts.

    Is it helpful?
    Is it truthful?
    Is it kind?

Let’s stop the passive aggressive behavior especially at the mic!!

    Hi Skipper,
I appreciate hearing what you've said here. I never signed the petition to get him out. I actually thought after some of his missteps with libraries and taking out welcome desk on 99th. My impression he was giving the community here was he was going to be an agent of much change. I found him to not be fully aware of the mindset of continuity with this community, and ultimately it hurt him. I would tell you that I don't think he was a compatible fit for the membership, what more can one say.

These are 6 qualities every community leader should strive for!

    1) Great leaders are good listeners.

Great community leaders listen to the ideas and opinions of their team members, then use them as a base from which they can build better policies or strategies for the organization. They don’t just wait until it’s time to make decisions; instead, they actively seek out feedback during all stages of development so that when things come to a head, there is already widespread support for the final decision.

    2) Great leaders are patient.

Leaders who take the time to foster a sense of community in their organization will always be more successful than those who push themselves above everyone else. When people feel like they’re being heard, it’s easy for them to get behind an idea or initiative because they know that their voice matters and is part of what makes the organization successful.

    3) Great leaders are transparent.

For an organization to function properly, all of the information needed by its stakeholders should be readily available and easy to access at any time. The best community managers prioritise transparency so that their team members always know where they stand in terms of progress toward reaching goals or success with initiatives.

    4) Great leaders know how to delegate.

Leaders who try to do everything themselves are bound to fail, as they will never have the time necessary to focus on what’s truly important. Instead of taking over every task that falls within their purview, good community managers learn when it is appropriate and beneficial for them to give tasks away so that other people can get involved and contribute to the organization.

    5) Great leaders are open to change.

Every community is constantly evolving, and the best leaders understand this fact to make room for new ideas or initiatives as needed without feeling threatened by them. Leaders who resist changes in their organization will only cause those around them to lose faith in their ability to lead effectively; meanwhile, a leader who embraces change will inspire their team to go along with them.

    6) Great leaders are optimistic.

One of the most important qualities a community manager can have is an unshakable belief that they and their organization are going places! Optimistic managers always look for ways to improve themselves or their team so that everyone involved becomes more successful together in the long run.

These are soft skills recommendations I found as examples of what good leadership should have. I saw these as positive qualities to seek in the next step of finding a new GM.

Dave you were gone from this site from 2021 to 2024. (see attached link) I joined here 12/5/23. Here is your first post to me.

I’m back. I am tan (not really), rested (somewhat) and ready ( most def). Looking forward to crossing swords with other members. Consequently I shall start Happy Hippie which seems to be an oxymoron, and believing she is a Baby Boomer and a former hippie, I invoke a statement from Woodstock saying that brown acid isn’t particularly good so you have been forewarned. That about sums her attitude.

I hated high school and couldn’t wait to leave. Graduation night a girl who was in my home room for four years asked me if I was sad. I replied no because starting tomorrow I will never see any of you people again in my life. It has come true and I am happy for it. University was different and I enjoyed all my classes, organic chemistry not so much.
