The walls of power do not fall without making lots of noise. Sometimes no good deed goes unpunished. That is my advice to Linda and Janet. Ignore it and do good deeds anyway. I was dismayed as I read Mr. Wheats and Mr. Makowski's letters in the Independent. I was even more dismayed when I saw who was on the Foundation Board. There were several people who have never even acknowledged that I exist even though I have gone out of my way to say hello. They are not the type of people I want in leadership positions. I appointed Linda to the Finance Committee and that is the type of person I want in a leadership position. Enough negativity! For those who stepped forward to do great things go forth with confidence. You have the knowledge and experience and can help move Sun City forward. Best regards and God Bless, John
Sad. Hard to believe that golf committee would control this decision making. I assume the BOD would control the final decision. And I would hope the BOD would look at other options for walking paths.
All committees, including the golf committee, can only make recommendations to the BOD. They are the ones that will make the decision. Unfortunately walkers don't pay green fees like golfers do so they don't have much clout. Perhaps some walkers would like to start a club. Also, maybe one or two golf courses could be designated as walking after certain hours. Most golf pro shops close at a certain time so I don't know how this would be enforced. Hopefully the BOD will find a solution.
Someone smart mentioned to me "we are one of the only, and very few communities with sidewalks on both sides of our streets - why not use that valuable feature of our community?" Makes no sense to him and others that were in the conversation. And what is wrong with the bottom path at Lakeview hill? Does Sun City West have a nice walking path? (A park with a walking path – similar to our Lakeview hill). How about The Grand? What if someone, some pet got hit with a golfball and sues Sun City (home owners). And to tell golfers they can't golf on their course because walkers want to walk it - does that make sense? How about we charge walkers some greens fee to make up for it? Or better yet, not spend $6M on an executive (9-hole) course that was poorly maintained by management and the reason it's in the shape it's in now, and turn that into a walking path/park? What competent management doesn't maintain an irrigation system???? The irrigation system is $4M of the $6M spend (according to contract RFPs not disclosed). Had they maintained it in the first place, it might not be in such bad shape for repair. Gotta keep up with facility maintenance - common sense . . . hopefully, we have turned the corner; however, I'd like to know if replacing all the exercise equipment at Oakmont was at the top of the 5-year reserve study . . . . seems suspect.
So when I am walking Riverview and someone sees me what are they going to do? Will I be arrested? Fined? Shot? Amazing.

Thanks, Josie - yes, I'm aware. Do you have a suggestion for what land we could use here in Sun City to create something similar? If we don't have the land we can't build it. Hence why I made the comment about Quail Run. That's a fiasco. Bottom line, though, is we don't have a park other than Lakeview here (that I know of), and if people want one, SCW can give them something a little bit closer to the desire. Bottom line, if Sun City no longer suits us or is no longer affordable to us, we'd take the responsibility to find a place that will - not expect others to foot the bill for our desires or financial situation. Yes, there are exceptions, which is one reason why we have CAN. And yes, we have to improve with the times to keep our homes valuable . . . the last 15 years we lost ground. Hopefully, we are turning around for good with right motives.
Janet, Agree the BOD has the authority and responsibility to further explore creating walking paths our membership had at the top of their lists on the ASU Survey. Should the decision have been up to the Golf Advisory Committee? Who’s surprised they shut it down? Why wasn’t it more appropriately given to the Long Range Planning Committee? Sun City West has EIGHT walking paths. We need to listen to our members by pursuing adding paths to our community, Isn’t that why we paid for the ASU Survey? Walking paths research needs to be reassigned for in depth consideration and creative solutions. • Maps of SCW eight walking paths: https://suncitywest.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Sun-CIty-West-Urban-Trails-Brochure.pdf
Generally when someone asks a question they don't know the answer. All I did was answer your question. I did not ask for your opinion. I have been walking Riverview on and off for years. Walking on the grass outside the fairway, cart paths near the houses is much easier on the joints compared to sidewalks. If SC is going to charge me for all their past mistakes I will walk the course if I want. I am fully aware of golf etiquette and know where I can and can't walk.
Now why would we do that. I just said I am adopting the RCSC mantra "it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission". We supposedly had the smartest person re Sun City very involved in all things Sun City, so how did this happen?
I wasn't aware of these "designated paths" . . . . based on the pictures and maps, it looks like they run through the streets - are they sidewalks or a separate path?
Board meeting - I will be there. My message is simple - there is reason for members to be optimistic about Sun City's future. I noted a few things about the agenda and budget materials that I find encouraging: The detailed budget presentation gives members transparency with respect to how their money is being spent for their benefit. The information shared allowed me to understand the need for fee increases. Our future capital requirements are finally in focus and not an afterthought. We are coming to grips with the fact that our facilities need to be preserved and improved. We can't keep waiting until something else breaks. Future golf fees and golf discounts available to members appear to be competitively set. Will higher fees cause a few less rounds to be played? Probably, but I don't think it will be catastrophic from a revenue standpoint. The Board and management recognize that PIF projects are not cast in stone. The project list, with the exception of Mountainview, is fluid and subject to change as the organization gains a deeper understanding of the realistic member benefits of any major expenditure. They also recognize that the Mountainview renovation has to be RCSC's highest priority and that the decision has to be made that a theater, if built, will or will not be a part of the Mountainview renovation. I still believe the organization has a material weakness when it comes to strategic planning. My hope is that the visionaries on the long range planning committee can help correct that weakness. It is obvious to many members that the allocation of long term funds represent the preferences of the directors in place at the time the decisions are made.
Josie, the park is the first thing I saw in the video - I didn't watch the whole thing - if these 8 walking paths were highlighted, then my apology for not watching in its entirety. What you may not be fully aware of is how well people may or may not golf. That's the point . . . legal issue most likely. And you give plenty of opinions on here - I first asked for your suggestion on land and just commenting on my thoughts. If you aren't interested, ignore. That's what I do with most of the ridiculous posts on this site.
If we have land for a 14 million dollar PAC when we have 2 now couldn't that land be used for a park?
A comprehensive plan (i.e strategic planning) is a long-term document that guides a community's future development and growth. It's also known as a general plan, master plan, or community plan. A comprehensive plan is a foundational document for long-term planning and zoning in the United States. A comprehensive plan includes: A vision for the community's future Goals and objectives for the community's future Policies and strategies for the community's future A map of future land uses Guidance on how to make decisions on land development proposals A comprehensive plan helps to: Ensure that development is coordinated and not costly Justify local regulations and capital improvement projects Guide individual development approvals Open new funding opportunities and grants Protect land from dangerous land-development practices A comprehensive plan is a recommendatory document, but its value is indicated by the community's desire to see it implemented. Public participation is key to the creation of a successful comprehensive plan.
BTW, just asked a friend in SCW and yes, they walk the courses and no one says a thing. No one gets arrested. No one gets their panties in a wad. They are adults.
Possible - converted golf course less expensive due to landscape already there. But yes, we don't use the facilities we have - there was a suggestion to add some retractable seats and an extra dressing room on to Sun Dial, but apparently it's not feasable. Don't know the details on why. Regardless, you don't spend $14M on a facility in which the activities could easily be held at one of our current facilities. Data doesn't support that spend for the purposes presented. For the record, Mountainview renovation is a must. And I did blow up the maps - not very clear, but it looks like some parts run behind houses and some along the road. Still pavement and not the grass for being easier on the limbs that you mentioned. I'm done - the dysfunction, lack of common sense, and crabbiness on this site is a waste of time. The lack of civility is really appalling on some of the other threads. An embarrassment for Sun City.
I agree I agree The dysfunctional part is that according to RCSC 70+ year old people cannot be trusted to walk on a closed golf course. Also dysfunctional is allowing people on this site to tell others to take their opinion and stuff between their thigh folds if they were not hanging to low, or another person saying no one gives a shit who you are. I am working very hard to get those folks off this site so we can get to important things like help with golf carts, help with home repairs. This is the only TOSC that has been hijacked by a couple of people to talk about RCSC only. Look at some other TOSC's. You will be surprised. This one is the only one focused on one thing.
And I would respectfully disagree. Mountain View renovations should be kept at a minimum. We didn't need an 8th Rec center at Grand. Why increase the number of rec centers when you live in a community that has no room for growth? Fairway is less than 1 mile away and where do suppose the local residence will go while Mountain View is shut down? Fairway!
