Janet, I actually never totaled up the cost of my BA until about ten years ago. I worked one summer for a masonry contractor hauling bricks and mud ( the term used for “cement” used for setting the bricks. I then spent three summers as an apprentice butcher for a large Chicago super market chain. It paid well and working 3+ months every year I accumulated a substantial amount to pay cash for my education and related expenses. I loved that job as I was dry aging primal cuts of meat in the back of the meat cooler to cut into steaks and roasts before I left for school. The family liked it because I could purchase beautiful roasts and the like at cost. The only downside was being low man on the totem pole and I had to clean the grease trap and I cannot begin to describe how disgusting it was. When I saw the pictures of Trump in McDonalds doing all sorts of tasks I thought that if he really wanted to see what that type of work is really like, have him clean the grease trap. That would really make him a working man.

During my high school years, I worked at a Dairy Queen type business. It was called "The Jalopy" because it had an actual jalopy on the roof. Luckily we didn't have a french fryer so I didn't have to deal with the grease but many customers complained when we told them we didn't have french fries.

During the years that I worked in the adult literacy field, I learned of many menial jobs that I wasn't aware of. The worst ones were associated with the local meatpacking plants. They used to run two shifts and the third shift had to clean the equipment. The one that really made me glad I didn't have to do was hosing out the cattle trucks after the livestock had been delivered to the meatpackers. Ugh! A $5,000 college education is worth not having to do that!

Bill's career was in the logistics/transportation business. Since we drive a lot, I have learned much about the trucking industry. I now know they are not "semi's" but "tractor/trailers." I know a plate truck from a "reefer". No it's not a joint, but a refrigerated carrier. It has been interesting. He did some work for the Union Pacific so I have learned some verbiage about that like "stack trains" and "double stack" trains. Are you in need of a "reefer"?

I like to learn new things. Keeps my mind active. Still have a few brain cells left, I think!
