Share a Thread relating to JOY!!!!! I'll start: ..... Twenty-five years ago today, the television drama “The West Wing,” depicting a fictitious American president and his White House staff, premiered on NBC. The hit show, created and written by Aaron Sorkin, ran for seven seasons, winning four Emmys for outstanding drama, among 26 total Emmys for the show and its cast. The program’s portrait of a president as a true spiritual and political leader, aspiring for the moral high ground, is credited with inspiring a generation of young people to become interested in public service and politics. When I interviewed Sorkin several years ago, he revealed a surprising casting choice that didn’t pan out. Martin Sheen, whose portrayal of President Jed Bartlet as both intellectual and honorable is one of the most iconic in television history, was not Sorkin’s first choice. The part was initially offered to Sidney Poitier, 10 years before Barack Obama became America’s first Black president. One of the most memorable scenes from a show full of memorable scenes depicts President Barlet schooling a hypocritical member of the religious right. (Link) It is certainly a lesson worth revisiting, especially these days. As part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, members of the cast reunited on last week’s Emmy broadcast to present the award for best drama, which went to “Shogun.” And then on Friday, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden hosted Sorkin, Sheen, and other cast members at the White House. Sheen, once again, stole the show. (Link)....... Share your JOY!!! Jean Totten as One Day at a Time
In February of 2010, Jane Freeman and i had the joy of "racing" through the community in our 50th anniversary parade. I think that old three-wheeled Westinghouse Marketeer golf car topped out at about 4 miles an hour. Perfect speed for a community parade and a wonderful opportunity for them to see the one woman most responsible for the creation of the Sun Cities Historical Society. In 2010 we changed the buildings name to the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum. By the way, the old golf car still sits outside the museum but it has not been driven since the parade. Cool, placed next to it is the other three-wheeler, that one a Cushman. For anyone who has watched The Beginning, you'll recognize them being labeled His and Hers.
Jane was lovely. Most probably don't remember Sun Health (now Banner) however Jane was on both boards so she was in the CEO's office a lot. She always came over to chat with us Admin Assistants.
I wonder if the left releasing this info to the press and Social Media is JOY? It could get someone killed. Breaking news about 2nd shooter. 2 sources of course. He left a letter offering $150,000 to the next person who tries to kill Trump and succeeds. How does the DOJ, FBI and the SS allow this to become public via social media. Are they complicit in the attempted assassinations on Trump? I think so. One of my favorite posters on Facebook is Roger Naylor. He is an award-winning travel writer, an avid hiker, and a road-trip junkie. He is a member of the Arizona Tourism Hall of Fame and the author of several Arizona guides. Following is his post from today. I need to take some of these drives; do you? Autumn is upon us and many folks around Arizona will be celebrating. While I do not like days becoming shorter, or winter looming, I’m also the first to admit that autumn by itself is gorgeous. Perfect for a road trip. It’s filled with its own blend of flavors and fragrances, sounds and feels. I’ve been munching Halloween candy for most of the past month, and this week we’ll crank up the monster movies in our own little spooky celebration of the season. I know many people are eagerly awaiting the onset of fall colors and I can help with that. For this year’s fall color story, I focused on some of the best leaf peeping hiking trails around the state. This will help get you started. Fall colors should start peaking in Flagstaff in about two weeks, then a week or so later for Rim Country, and late October into November for Sedona. Since leaves change due to waning sunlight, they tend to follow a fairly consistent schedule each year, varying only slightly. So, you can start planning your trips to the high country for October. (Apologies, sharing this library Joy evolved into thread content you may prefer to ignore. Should have known better than to return to TOSC) Joy! Let there only be truthful joy replies! “A “YOU DID IT!” Thank You, from the Friends of the Sun City Libraries in the Sun City Independent! From Sue Blechi, President Facebook post: “While it took many months it's finally done! Our library contracts are renewed. We need to come together to make sure something like this does not happen again. It was wonderful seeing SC residents come together to stop the closure of the libraries. We were blindsided as was Friends of the Library. This was on my FB feed: "The Friends of the Sun City Libraries, Inc. are not directly involved in the agreement between the two, nor were we involved in the negotiations. The continuation of the agreement between the two organizations, however, is very important to us. Not a lot was changed in the lease, but clarification of many unwritten understandings were included in the new lease. The changes of most interest to the Friends were: 1. Security guards will be posted at both branches during open hours, paid for by MCLD. 2. MCLD will cover the costs of the Friends' paper recycling and pest control. 3. RCSC will continue to handle maintenance. 4. Representatives of RCSC and MCLD will meet semi-annually to discuss how things are going. 5. Negotiations for the next lease will begin one year before expiration. The Friends are delighted that our Libraries will continue to operate as in the past. Although at times tensions raised over the matter, in the end a new and better lease was signed by both parties, misunderstandings were clarified, and communication and respect were improved with all involved. We could not be more pleased with the outcome. In case you have not seen our ad in this week's Independent, here's the link to the paper. Once there, just click the arrow to get to page 15. Would it be possible to not take the Lord's name in vain? "Taking the Lord's name in vain" is a phrase that appears in the Bible's Ten Commandments and refers to using God's name in a way that is wrong, worthless, or wicked: Exodus 20:7: "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain" Jean Totten as One Day at a Time
Don't go there with me jean. You live your religion and I will live mine. I am a tad tired of the pious attitude. You have told me several times of I don't like what you write, don't read it. That goes both ways. We are not a communist country.......yet. I am assuming you have admonished both Dave and Bill for their foul language and hate speak, yes? And BTW I did not use Jesus' name in vain. It must not be abused by careless speech, false oaths, or words of hatred, reproach or defiance toward God, or used in magic.
Brings me JOY Washington — Violent crime and property crime decreased overall in 2023, according to data released by the FBI on Monday, although the year saw a rise in car thefts. The FBI's 2023 crime report, which the agency releases annually, uses crime statistics from law enforcement agencies and partners throughout the country to outline the crime landscape nationwide. In 2023, the data was submitted by more than 16,000 agencies. This year's report comes just weeks ahead of the presidential election, where crime has become a key issue on the campaign trail. Violent crime down Violent crime — which includes murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, aggravated assault and robbery — decreased by around 3% from 2022 to 2023 nationwide, the report found. Among the findings, murder and non-negligent manslaughter saw a decrease of 11.6% from the previous year, along with a 9.4% decrease in rape, a 0.3% decrease in robberies and a 2.8% decrease in aggravated assault. The declining violent crime rates come after a spike in violent crime during the COVID-19 pandemic. Violent crime also waned in 2022, falling by 1.7%. Overall, more than 1.2 million violent crimes were committed in 2023, the report estimated. Murder rate sees largest single-year decline in 20 years The decrease in the murder rate between 2022 and 2023 represents the "largest drop" in the rate in the last 20 years, an FBI official said. The murder rate fell from 6.5 to 5.7 murders per 100,000 inhabitants in 2023. The decline comes after the murder rate spiked to an average of 6.6 per 100,000 people from 2020 to 2022. But the 2023 figures are still slightly higher than the 20-year average. Property crime down, car thefts up Property crime was also down overall, with a 2.4% drop from 2022, accounting for burglary, larceny theft and motor vehicle theft. While burglary decreased by 7.6% and larceny — property theft without violence — by 4.4%, motor vehicle theft saw an increase of 12.6%, according to the report. Motor vehicle thefts were also up substantially in 2022, with a nearly 11% rise from 2021. While that year saw the largest year-to-year motor vehicle theft rate increase, the report says 2023 marked the highest motor vehicle theft rate since 2007. Among the thefts, cars were the most common, seeing a more than 20% increase in theft between 2022 and 2023, as compared to buses, trucks and other vehicles, the report says. In 2023, more than 6.4 million property crimes were committed, according to the report. Campaigning on crime Crime has been among the most prominent issues candidates have invoked on the campaign trail, and has been especially pronounced among Republicans. During the presidential debate earlier this month, former President Donald Trump claimed that crime is "through the roof" in the U.S. And after the moderators pointed to FBI statistics that suggest otherwise, Trump called the agency's data "defrauding statements." Trump has often criticized the Biden-Harris administration on crime, claiming that the country is much more dangerous than it was four years ago under his own administration. On Monday, President Biden touted the FBI figures, noting that although the administration had seen among the highest murder rates when he first came to office, the new report from the agency "confirms again that Americans are safer than when we took office." "None of this happened by accident," the president said in a statement, pointing to public safety and firearm initiatives. "We're not stopping now." CBS News Jean Totten as One Day at a Time
More JOY Trump says he will not run again if he loses election Bernd Debusmann Jr BBC News, Washington Former President Donald Trump has said he does not expect to run for election again in 2028 if he is defeated in this November's US presidential poll. Trump, 78, has been the Republican candidate for three national elections in a row and has reshaped the party greatly over the last eight years. In an interview with Sinclair Media Group, he was asked if he could foresee another run in the event that he loses to Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris. "No, I don't. I think... that will be it," Trump said. "I don't see that at all." But he added that "hopefully, we're going to be very successful". US law bars presidents from serving more than two terms, and so Trump is not expected to run in 2028 if he wins, either. In the past, the real estate mogul has rarely acknowledged the possibility of losing the election, more often firing up supporters with speeches and social media posts pledging victory at the polls. But this is the second time in four days he has mentioned a chance of defeat. During an event held by the Israeli-American Council on Thursday, he brought up losing, and suggested that any such loss would partly be the fault of Jewish voters. "Do they know what the hell is happening if I don't win this election?" he said, according to various media reports. "And the Jewish people would have to do a lot with that if that happens because at 40% [support] that means 60% of the people are voting for the enemy." The comments were condemned by the Harris campaign and by the nonpartisan American Jewish Committee and Anti-Defamation League. Trump's acknowledgments of a possible loss may reflect how the Democratic Party's prospects have changed since Harris became its nominee following President Joe Biden's decision to quit the race. Her campaign raised more than $190m (£142m) in August, compared to $130m brought in by the Trump campaign and affiliated organisations. In national polling averages tracked by the BBC she is ahead of Trump, and a poll released on Sunday by CBS indicated she leads Trump 52% to 48% nationally. In key US battleground states which look set to prove decisive to the overall result, Harris has a narrower lead of 51% to 49%, which is a slight improvement from the even 50% in a similar poll conducted last month by CBS, the BBC's news partner. Who won the Harris-Trump presidential debate? Another poll released on Sunday by NBC indicated Harris had a five percentage point lead over Trump across the US. It also found that 48% of registered voters see her positively compared to 32% in July - the largest jump since then-President George W Bush's favourability surged after the 11 September 2001 attacks. But like other surveys, the NBC poll suggested Trump held a clear advantage with voters on some of the election's biggest issues, including the economy, the cost of living and immigration. The BBC has contacted the Trump campaign for comment on the polling data. Jean Totten as One Day at a Time
