Coming up over the next two weeks are two very important meetings and I encourage anyone that is able to attend them. Both the Finance and Budget Committee and Long-Range Planning Committee are meeting and it is likely there will be some discussion of the yet to be disclosed 5-year plan at both meetings. The date, time and location of the meetings are as follows: · Finance and Budget Committee Meeting: Wednesday, May 8, 1:00 PM in the Lakeview Board Room · Long Range Planning Committee Meeting: Tuesday May 13, 8:30 AM in the Lakeview Board Room Why are these meetings so important? These, and perhaps some special meetings this month, will explain the proposed long-term strategy for RCSC and, of course, future fees. This will be an excellent opportunity to get educated about the future of your recreation centers. It will also be an opportunity to see how adding new buildings or acquiring old ones impacts the fee increases we will certainly face in coming years. I am going to attend and hope that you will attend as well.
There was a good turnout at the F&B Committee meeting. This is what I think I heard. We are favorable to budget for Q 1 by a substantial amount, but it was explained much of this is due to timing of expenses. Some 2024 expenses were budgeted to be substantially over 2023 levels in order to put RCSC more in line with our competitors and this was reflected in the year over year comparisons. The reserve study, which is meant to estimate by year how much it will cost to replace existing assets, is expected to be completed by the end of May. There was an update of the efforts to develop a five-year plan that was a bit confusing and was intermingled with discussions about the CIF and PIF. My takeaway was no one is quite sure how all the pieces (expenses, short term capital and long-term capital) fit together into a whole. It takes a great deal of time to figure this out. There was a kind of a non-update update on the abandoned hospital the board is considering purchasing. All we learned was it is still for sale, someone is negotiating for a RCSC to have an option to purchase, and we are not quite sure what we will do with it if we buy it or how it fits into a long-range plan that has yet to be developed. Guests were asked to leave at the end of the meeting so the committee could receive a confidential briefing. I did not see the notice that part of this meeting would be closed to the members.
So much for transparency! Why couldn't they allow those of us who would comply with the rules of an executive session stay, and those who didn't should leave?
That's what happens when you have a toxic or dysfunctional board. Over time members lose their say in what happens within their community. Assessment fee changes, building purchases, deferred maintenance issues, libraries. The last update I saw on the libraries I had to look up on the website (still nothing definitive). For some reason I stopped getting RCSC updates a while ago even though I have requested twice. Latest library update (sorry if I am a bit skeptical). FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 17, 2024 The RCSC Board would like to report that we are making progress defining the terms of a five-year lease agreement with Maricopa County Library District (MCLD), which would replace the current five-year lease (2019-2024) that expires on June 30.
Yes, thank you for posting again. The canned remarks of all board members were great. "should have a new five year lease for both libraries," is not a phrase I would interpret as fact. It will not be a "done deal" until the contract is signed. Kind of like buying a home. Right now, the 'contract is pending". Whether you personally agree or not, the fact is the board and GM have lost the trust of Sun City residents. You see the posts on ND, and although you hide behind the block feature on that platform from me I can still glean the gist of what you are saying from the responses.
